I cut off the *insert name of the piece that holds the spindles* and well, rust



thankfully it seems to be almost exclusively surface rust and after examining the rest of the pipe that I cut off the metal seems pretty healthy, I guess we won’t know 100% until I strip the paint. how moisture got in there is beyond me
.
In order to prevent more moisture from getting in while it’s exposed I made some wooden plugs, doused the inside of the pipe with WD-40 and hammer them in hard
