Green/crap brown Xmas for us! 58 degrees, 40-65mph winds, and about 7" of snow magically turned into brown grass and mud in less than 24hr. Even got some miles on the Spyder today! But snow, back into the 20s, and even more wind over the next few days.

Supposedly under a winter advisory for 3-6 inches of snow with ice under from midnight. On another note, back in 2010 for Welding and Fabrication class in high school, I was building an ice castle frame. Built the whole trailer frame from 3"x3"x11ga square tubing. Cleaned, primed, and painted it with automotive jet black (semi-gloss). Well it had been sitting outside for the last decade. Surprisingly no rust at all, despite being in the elements. Since I hadn't touched it in many years and with my dad moving, it came down to either scraping it (wouldn't get anywhere near what I have in it for steel) or sell it. Well may already have a buyer. I guess one of my uncles may need a trailer.

I would have finished this thing years ago, but the issue I was having was finding pre-made or plans on how to build the drop axles. The drop axles allow the frame and house to sit on the ground or ice (both in this case as it was going to double as a camper). Well never found any decent plans or pre-made drop axles, so it just sat outside. On top of that, I built it with odd dimensions, 6.5' wide 10' long. Would have been kind of cramped with more than 3 adults in it. If I had built it at 6' wide 14' long, it would've been a different story, could have found straight axles and used it as a trailer and/or build a slide on camper shell to slide into it.

This was my Xmas. That new Xmember is gonna outlast the rest of the truck by about 200yrs. Only gotta do about 10hr of metal work on the bed and she's golden.

So i got round to tearing apart the old 5 horse Briggs I severed from a 1977 rototiller, and just LOOK AT THAT NASTY MUFFLER!! :ack2:
Those holes were from when I grabbed it by the muffler and punched a big hole in the rusted out metal with my bare fingers! It had about the same feel as a cheap saltine cracker!! Also never seen an exhaust gasket like this, it’s basically just a metal plate between the muffler and the block! Also one of the bolts broke off in the block....
No biggie though because this engine isn’t worth much. Popped the head, found it has the dinky valvetrain and a plain aluminum Kool Bore. Albeit, it is in pretty good shape given how neglected the rest of the engine is, no scoring and remnants of the original crosshatch! But again, nothing about this engine really makes it worth restoring, it even has plain bearings and the stubby crankshaft that’s too short for a proper clutch.
The most *cough cough* fun part was getting the drive pulley off the crank!!! :ack2:
I spent literally like an hour and a half BEATING the pulley off after SOAKING it in PB Blaster! I’ve heard how bad these things are to get off the crank, and I tell ya, it’s ALL TRUE!! By the time I got it off my hands were SHAKING, and the pulley is beyond trashed.
Now you may ask: Why would I spend 1 1/2 hours beating the pulley off an engine I don’t want to save? It’s simple.
I want its heart. :stir:
No but in all actuality I’m going to crack open the crankcase soon to harvest the camshaft.
Now that Briggs and Stratton has stopped making cam cores, DynoCams has run out so now the deal is that you have to send a good core to them to modify into the cam of your choice. So either I’ll sell this core to someone else, or I might pay to have it ground by DynoCams to plug into the Hothead.

I can understand why. I hope to find a decent I/C donor to build one day. I have a 8hp flathead I/C briggs, 10hp OHV, but no 5.

Plenty of kool bore's. Might get one sleeved, one day. Azusa bike needs a motor, wore out the bore on the OG predator 212, the first one I ever bought, in the early days. 12 to 1 compression and 7000+ rpm can do that. Well not really early days, my parents bought me a blue greyhound HF motor for good grades in my youth, for my manco dingo, but I dont think that counts.

Yeah it seems to be like 10:1 or something with the number of Kool Bores to steel sleeved engines. I got really lucky that the Hothead engine is the sleeved kind in good shape. Glad I at least tore into this one though! I don’t have to regret possibly tossing a good condition steelbore! But again, given all the “low end” configuration on this engine, not really worth the time and trouble to fix it up. Good luck finding a steelbore, I let a late 90s one on a pressure washer get away from me! Argh!

Have a few flatheads that my dad and I have brought home. A 5horse that had a bad(rusted) tank, I got one with a stuck exhaust valve and after freeing it I found the crack in the block that went from mid flywheel down and across the bottom. Gave one to my friend for a generator because his block was toast.

If anyone at home has a kohler v-twin courage, command, 7000 series, horizontal, vertical, ect, and changes their oil, this might be interesting.

The #12 050 01 kohler oil filter is the shortest one, and sometimes required, like on the cub cadet xt1-2 riding mowers, that will have an interference issue with the steering rod, if a longer filter is used.

The #52 050 02 kohler filter is the taller, high capacity filter, that can be used in place of the #12 050 01.
This filter can be cross referenced to a L10241 Purolator, commonly in stock for $6.99. Standard for the command line.

The #277233-S kohler filter is the largest capacity, and used in commercial applications, sometimes remote filter. It is significantly bigger/taller than the #52 050 02 filter. But all three kohler filters can be physically interchanged.

But the cross reference from the large capacity $20 OEM #277233-S kohler filter, to Purolator, is L20195.
The L20195 is commonly in stock , and cost the same $6.99 as the L10241, but extra capacity.

So now I will use the L20195 on my 22hp command kart, and courage 25hp super lt 1550 grass wacker.

If nothing else Karl, with posting the model numbers and P/N someone using Google may locate that information by chance on here. 👍

Since I've taken some time off from work at the end of this month for some ice fishing, I'm going to see if my sled works. Needs new plugs, fuel line and I hope it'll start up with good mix gas and carb cleaning. If not, may need an overhaul or I'm looking for yet another engine for the off road Mini buggy...still haven't come up with a project name, been tossing around some in the old thinking meat.

Uhhhhhhh YUCK!!! :ack2:
I pulled the drain plug and THIS came out!! It started off looking like caramel and then turned to MAYONNAISE! After awhile it was so thick it actually stopped draining! I literally SCRAPED this stuff out of the crankcase, there was like 1/2" of it sitting in the bottom! The cam doesn't look so promising, a bit of rust and signs of oil starvation. It might still be saveable but IDK. Plain bearings all around.

Anyone know what this is? I suspect it's the result of oil and water mingling for like 10 years outside, but it STANK like a putrid smell. Of note, it also sank to the bottom of the dirty oil bucket.

But yeah now that I took the cam out I have no regrets about scrapping this engine, it's too far gone and just plain NASTY! To top it off I'd have to track down another crankshaft and sidecover to make it usable on a kart because the bearing journal protrudes farther than usual. So I took the cam and the carb, put everything else back on, then I took it to my scrapper friend.

RIP

Tonight's project is to repair this 5000 watt generator saved from the scraper.

No mayonnaise, but generator's motor has 0 compression, valve guide and seat shot. Cool bore scoured.

The red engine has a good bore and valves, but is locked up on the rod.

So good crank and rod from gen will go into the red motor, shoved back in the frame, then free 5000w power?

Haha in your dreams, my projects are NEVER that easy, there’s always some huge problem I have to fix.
