Now I think I’d like to bend this tang so the back of the tank sits a bit lower but not really sure how to do it. This tank doesn’t really work for me but it’ll do fine. Because it’s curved and welded I don’t think bending it will be as easy as I thought.

Cut slots from each side to just in front on the weld? Score a partial cut in front of the weld? That should do it, right?

Just put it in a vice and squish
Might give that a try. I’ll probably do a few small cuts from each side first. I know nothing about sheet metal but was worried just smashing without cutting might compromise the tank in another area because it’s welded in a few spots.

I’m now looking into how to best insert these inserts into plywood.

I’ve read anywhere from 3/8” drill to 29/64” bit.
Some say to use epoxy.
Some say to use drill press turned by hand to insert these so they go in straight. image.jpg

Maybe still a little cold?
Getting better I think.
This was wire speed about 9 of 10.

I’m not sure if age of wire matters? The old stuff was probably 8 years old at least. Plus have not using the anti-spatter the new wire.

Update: I guess shelf life is two years.

l am not qualified to comment on the welds, but yer threaded inserts...
measure the minor diameter and drill a hole a few thou smaller.
Use the appropriate hex driver and some glue or epoxy and screw em in.
don't beat em in or press em in. The whole point is the threads need to bite into yer wood or its gonna pull out. The glue/epoxy also acts as a lube to reduce screwing effort.Take That advice anyway you like. A power driver is nice if ya can slow it down.
if its too fast the insert goes all the way through before ya know it.

That sheet metal wants to be flat. It will stretch the little bit it needs to. No need to cut it and make it weaker. 48 years of doing body work has taught me this.

I wish the teardrop shape of the tank was less teardroppy.

It just looks off with square front of the seat and the pointed back of the tank.

It’s like my brain does not like it. Like a round peg in a square hole.

Put the tank on 180 degrees Pointy end first. More aerodynamics.

Yeah that does look kinda funny.
How are you at upholstery? Maybe take the corners off the front of the seat?
Or am I gonna open a can of GAB.

I thought about turning the tank around but I don’t care about aesthetics enough to undo things that I’ve done.

It’ll hold gas and that will do.

It does look better backwards.

Nah I don’t want to cut the seat apart. It is the nicest looking part of the bike. It won’t look nice after I get into it.
