How exactly will a mechanical brake linkage work? The minute your go kart hits the ground, expanding the total length of the frame the brake with pull. Either that or it will start to pus backwards and bend the brake rod. Why not just go hydraulic or use a heavy duty brake cable?

My hydraulic cable is short by about a foot and a half and even if I got a longer one, I don’t have room in front of the brake pedal to put it there. So I’m going from the brake pedal, to a rod, then to the master cylinder which is going to be mounted in front of the seat.

Ahh, so your brake rod is like a foot long. Makes more sense. Just curious, why not the heavy duty brake cable?

I had a spare hydraulic caliper and hose, I personally prefer hydraulic over cable, and the pedal was already setup for a rod.

And this way, I only have ~$25 into the brakes. There’s the brake pads $5-6, DOT4 brake fluid $6, and the master cylinder $15.

I didn’t get quite as much done this past few days as I should have but everybody has slow days every now and then.

I got the brake rod finished and primed and I started on paint removal on the rear portion.

I’m thinking I’ll get everything painted and put together and then work on the cargo rack, larger gas tank, and tool box.

I got the majority of the rear portion sanded today and I forgot to take a picture of the brake rod guide.

I had to put the brake pads I bought for the kart onto our quad because they needed to be replaced about a week ago. I checked them today and they are just about gone, so I’m gonna have to buy them from a different place.

They were to heavy for a flat rate envelope but I cut down a box from work to the exact size for the shocks. I will check tomorrow or Wednesday on my way to work for pricing. I highly doubt it’s gonna be over $20 as I’ve been selling a lot on eBay of stuff I had laying around I don’t need anymore.

How long of brake hose you need I just chunked 3 brand new ones with your exact fittings in the trash can in the shop. I will send them in the box also. Plus the new matching brake caliper and pads.

If you are going to throw the caliper and hoses away, I’ll take them. I have my brake assembly already made and I don’t need a longer hose because I can’t mount the master cylinder in front of the pedal. I could however use a different hose because the one I have now, the rubber sleeve is ripped almost all the way around on one end. Depending on how much I’d need to change on the caliper mount, I might even use those calipers, they look like better quality.

I’m thinking my next project will be a Schwin StingRay moped and then after that maybe a mini bike. I could use the other hoses and stuff on those.

I finished paint removal on the rear portion, the brace that goes on the front of the kart, and the steering spindles.

I have to get a wire wheel(not cup brush) for my angle grinder and some primer because I ended up just removing the paint instead of scuffing it. I’m also going to check for 1/4” key stock at the place I’m getting the wire wheel from.

I also decided not to white wash the rear wheels because they are powder coated and I don’t want to put a possibly less rust resistant paint on.

Wednesday I picked up the knotted wire wheel, 4 lock washers for the pillow block bearings, 2 1” self tapping screws for mounting the master cylinder, and 5 1.5” long 1/4” key stock.

Today I picked up some Majic tractor primer and 2 master links at TS. I personally don’t like using them but I’m hoping that since I’m gonna have a steady sprocket mount, they shouldn’t fly off.

The wire wheel made things go a lot faster and I got the main part of the kart brushed. I’m planning on priming it tomorrow, then top coating it on Sunday, and beginning to rebuild it on Monday. I’m also going to stop by and try to get the keyway put in the sprocket mount tomorrow.

I still have the bump cage or whatever it’s called to strip and paint the second color.

It still sorta surprises me how shiny the original paint is/was. I managed to pull the serial number sticker off in one piece and I think it’s a model 287, if my guess is right.

Yesterday I got it primed and today I(I should say my father) got the top coat done. I’m going to wait a little longer than what the paint can says for it to dry. I also finished stripping the paint on the bump cage and I got two coats of primer on that. There’s not much else I can do without it assembled. Tomorrow I’m going to cut the foot pan out of a piece of stainless and then self tap it on when it’s all dry and top coat the bump cage.

Most of today I was fixing a Chinese quad my father got for free(for parts or my little brother) and was beating it around the yard before I replace some other things on it so it’s not a danger for my brother. It was probably the fastest I’ve ever gotten the carb adjusted right.

I got the bump cage fully painted and I ended up spraying the front wheels without sanding because they’d be too hard to sand.

The paint turned out exceedingly well, extremely smooth and shiny, even over the welds. The paint sorta looks like a midnight black. I waited as long as I could and before I went in for the night I couldn’t help but start assembling the steering column and pedals.

I cut the foot pan out and started on the wheel wells but dulled the blade before I could finish. I made a jig out of wood for welding 90* and it works good. I don’t have enough stock material for a cargo rack but I might be able to stretch it if I cut up a junk generator cage.

Yesterday I got the brake assembly installed, I ended up taking the caliper off the quad I got the other day and using it because the paint wasn’t chipped, all the rubber seals weren’t damaged too bad, and it had return springs so the pads don’t lockup. I also got the axle, brake disc, and pillow block bearings installed. I set the engine on it and put the bolts in loosely, put the shocks I have on temporarily, and also connected the throttle cable to the pedal. I had my father self tap the foot pan for me because he’s got more experience in holding it still and stuff without the drill slipping.

I went to prepare the chain that was on it and it turns out it’s not even close to #41. So now I have 2 #41 master links I can’t return. I had about 10 links of 420 chain and it fits MUCH better, I think the large chain(wide) was part of the reason it kept falling off before. So I ordered some 420 because it’s close enough to #41 and I got some previously for a quad and it has held up excellently.

Here’s some pictures of it in the sunlight, I still have some areas to touch up and the paint is dry to the touch but I don’t think it’s 100% dry yet so I’m being extremely cautious.

Between yesterday and today, I connected the throttle to the engine and zip tied it down, installed the kill switch, cut some spacers and fit everything to the axle, bought some nuts and washers for the axle, dropped off the sprocket mount for the keyway to be cut, and bled the brakes again.

I made the wheel well frame and the mounts(I still have to clean up the welds on the mounts). And I’m going to try to make a “tool box” into the wheel wells for spare belts or master links and small stuff.

I have to pick up the sprocket mount tomorrow and the chain is coming in so I should be able to take it for a test drive.

I was hoping to ride it last weekend but ofc the Teckasheema curse had to strike. It was running when I put it up and I also emptied the carb. I bought another carb and that didn’t do much, ive got spark, tried a good plug, I set the valve lash(yes the right way(the exhaust was way off)), compression, I cleaned the magneto and the magnet, and I’m sure I put it all back together correctly. Im thinking it might be the magneto. I’m going to see if a guy my father knows can help. I really want to ride it before school starts(Monday) so I’m thinking I’ll give it till tomorrow and if the guy can’t do anything I’m going to set it aside for another day/build and buy my neighbors predator. I know it’d be wiser to just buy a new one but I’ve been work all summer on it and I want to ride it before it ends.

Between breaks, I drilled the holes for the wheel well mounts, picked up some bolts, cut the bottom pieces for them, cut the right side top(still have to trim it for the locks), tacked the bottoms on with self tapping screws, sprayed the welds with black spray paint, and worked on the seat. I’m thinking I’ll seal it with either silicone or weather stripping. I’d also like the silicone the edges and gaps to make it semi waterproof and so that if someone picked it up by them they don’t get cut.

I’m going to use the duck taped seat I made and use some roofing rubber to make it water resistant. Then put a pair of shorts that had a rip in them over it to make it look like a legitimate seat/cover.

I remembered I had a set of wheels that were on another build that was “completed” and I checked them today and it turns out I can use them on the front of the kart. They’re from a snowblower and basically brand new so I’ll definitely have enough traction in the front to turn. They’re at my fathers work shop down the road so I’m gonna have to wait for a ride, it should be either tomorrow or Friday.

I cut the bottom of the seat, traced the back of the head cushion because the other one rotted out, and drilled the holes for the mounting bolts.

Oh! And I got the shocks and brakes in from Joe-405. I won’t be able to use the brake caliper because I’d need to modify the mount too much. But I did install the shocks and the black/chrome look much better than the yellow/silver. I didn’t take a picture because I didn’t have my phone on me but I’ll get one tomorrow.
