Sounds kinda like you missed second and shifted back into neutral. On dirtbike transmissions (which I assume is what it is, you have not posted pictures or the kart engine details) the gear order is 1-N-2-3-4-5.

I didn't clarify. Plan is to take that out and replace it with the two jetski engines. It already has water intake holes as well. I do not plan to take the mercruiser engine and put it in a kart (well maybe in the future)
