Well, i've been looking for the right engine for my kart, i was leaning towards a sled engine but i found an old kz400 for $40 and couldnt pass that up, a major carb cleaning and a coil later and it fired right up. So i'm gonna put that in my kart, starting pretty soon. Plans are too extend my kart frame 16", make a roll bar, if not a full cage, get some better brakes going, better tie rods, and just stiffen up the frame all together.
Heres a video of the bike running, right after i cleaned the carbs and put in the new coil, i just realized it was running on choke that whole time so i guess i have to clean the carbs a bit better.

Theres the kart about a month ago, since then it has been bent up pretty good by jumping it and whatnot, theres a good 5-8* of camber from bending.

It will run better with the boots from the carbs to airbox hooked up. Looking forward to seeing this

$40 isn't all that bad for a diaphragm, my Kawasaki Mule has 2 carbs, both diaphragms are torn, and they are $110 EACH, :mad2:
I glued/patched them together for now, but I'll replace the carbs with something else before I spend that on them. I only use it for pushing dead cars and moving boat and jetski trailers around anyway, as long as it starts and runs, I'm good, for now anyway,

crazycart, i thought it didnt matter if the airfilter was on or off? as far as engine performance i mean.

I need to get cables for the speedo and tach, but once i do i'll definitely hook those up to the kart.

So i got the bike together today and took her for a test run, all is good, clutch works, shifts through gears, and has an ok amount of power. After letting it warm up a bit it runs fine without choke on. i almost seized it, the **** oil plug vibrated out while i was going around the yard, luckily i caught it before all the oil leaked out. Close call though, need a new oil plug now.

So your making your kart awd right? You can't possibly put all that power to the ground with just two tires.

15x6.5x6 turf savers all around, 2wd...gonna be fun!

Havent done much, but i did talk to my shop teacher today (tech school) and he said even though we havent gone over using the mills yet he will cut a keyway in some extra 1" stock i had lying around, so that will be my jackshaft. I still need to figure out gearing. My moms boyfriend is picking me up some 1" pipe tonight so i can extend my frame, and reinforce it.

I'm gonna buy him some JR dragster tires on the back of it, just for that reason. :)

Awesome! :roflol:

These four strokes are really touchy when it comes to jetting. Without the boots on, it is mostly sucking unrestricted air which affects the jetting substantially. If you put them on, i'm sure you will notice quite a bit more off idle - low end power.

For a given jet size, the more restrictive the air filter, the richer it will run. No filter at all will cause it to run lean.

Frame is extended and welded up, still need to reinforce it make/adapt the seat mounts, because they will basically dictate where the engine, and frame reinforcements go. I have it all planned out in my head (wish i had a good 3d design program...), and i see no problems with mounting, jackshaft, etc. The hardest part is going to be adapting the exhausts, but luckily im going to a tech school that has ever tool i would ever need, and a very knowledgeable shop teacher.

I need some opinions, do you guys think a 3/4" axle will work alright for a jackshaft? Im not sure how well it will hold up to this engine. i was hoping to use a length of 1" axle i had, but it turns out its just a piece of 1" pipe after looking closer.

I'll get some pictures tomorrow.
