I decided to build another kart, live axle, and capable of supporting v-twin/40series or 340cc rotax power

Proper DIY kart , from 1in OD 3/4 ID tubing , I wanted it to look like an azusa kart, with the double row frame for rigidity.

I have bent mulitple 1in live axles, So I am stepping up the rear end to 1 1/4in , and 3/4 on the front spindles, as it will be doing wheelies

I already have a set of 3/4 pillow blocks and key shaft for the Jackshaft, none of that backplate junk

I use Surplus Center quite a bit, always good prices and the pieces have always been great quality. I"ll be using them again when I do the rear end on my buggy. Working at a CNC plasma cutting shop, I'll be making my own wheel hubs and go with a 1.5" axle.

I have used surplus center for a few years and never have been disappointed.

That axle should be bulletproof!

This is how it will sit with the 36in axle and hubs, I may go bigger in back, current 18x9.50-8 , the fronts that I will be using are 16x6.50-8.

I made the frame 5in wider in the back to help support the rear axle and I think it looks cool

And I held off on the sprocket, I might use two jackshafts to keep the axle sprocket small, and I want stupid torque

I think I will drag a bone stock kohler command 20 from the basement and use it for now, then when the turbo efi command is ready, its bolt in.

That would blow the whole budget! lol

I have 3/4 bearings and shaft in stock, and I will make it plenty strong


Anybody know where to get some heavy steel 4 on 4 hubs for inch and a quarter?

The axle arrived! Then I remember I stripped the gearbox out on my 4 1/2in grinder, so I need to buy another to cut out the plates

I ended up ordering the billet hubs from BMI so we shall see, but dang this axle is heavy, definitely not breaking this one.

Off on a tangent, I broke the roller of doom, a 500ish lb concrete+brick filled lawn roller that is towed by the chair, So some welding was in order, and I had to paint the welds, and I could not resist

And I finally got wheel weights on 8in 5 lug on 4.5in rims. And yes 6 flywheels are stacked on the back, sacrifices

I dont think I can break this one!

Got a little time to work on it, Picked up a fancy new grinder (this time with the $6 two year warranty , as I broke its predecessor just before then)

Need to pick up 7/16 bolts to finish mounting the axle.

There is enough clearance for 12in sprocket and brake rotor.

I've never found any for sale 4 on 4 hubs for anything larger than a 1" axle. Rather B Welding had to make his own several times for that reason. You may just have to get the more common 4x156 hubs. That's a common pattern for quads and UTVs.

I bought the billet hubs from bmi karts.

I have a few 4 on 4 wheels so that is what I used.

Stopped by the local hardware store and picked up 7/16 grade 5 bolts.

I got the axle squared up and both plates burned in.

Man does the engine make the frame look small

Need to decide a gear ratio, order sprockets , brake disk, and clutch, and figure out how to make it all fit

The brake rotor hub is on backorder from BMI karts, (but still In-stock on their own website), So my order with the front spindles and rotor is held up.

Snow is here, started working on the sled, new fuel lines (need to pick up small tubing for primer), cleaned out the gas tank. I had it running off a separate tank earlier this year.

Its ratty, and I only paid $75 for it, I really bought it for the engine. I want to at least ride it a couple times.

Still thinking about putting it on the kart, I assume its close to 25-30hp output (maybe someone could correct me)

Opinions? Command or Rotax?

Tough call. The Rotax will need some tuning to be ran in the summer as to not melt the piston(s) and will have more power than the Kholer. My vote is Rotax.
