when you are welding relatively thick metal try to chamfer the edges with a grinder... makes the weld look cleaner and is MUUUUCH stronger...

-----\/------ plus you could get your hands on a sandpaper attachment for your grinder with a couple meduim grit papers... it really brings a nice touch to the finish...

also flash is right... the proper thecnique is to properly set the gmaw parameters and weld in a straight line... its much more pretty than a weaved out weld

these pics are actually quick welds i did at work on my break lol...

in order fcaw t11 gas shielded and smaw 7018-1

sorry i hijacked your thread ;)

that is qute thick steel
yes there are some very messy welds
i am improving though
i dont get this weld in a straight line thing everyone brags about
if i weld straight then it is a heaped line that looks like a trail of glue (if u can visulize that) it isnt anything like above

this came from the F1 indy kart thread

I was taught to make small circles or half moons when welding with a mig welder on steel. When using a mig, with spool gun, for aluminum, I was told to go in a straight line at a constant pace. With stick use circles to stir the puddle.

Yeah, self taught also. making good welds in my opinion all boils down to how well you have your hands rested near what you're welding. I hold the gun on my wire feed mig with 2 hands for maximum control and precision. the type of pattern I use I determine by the joint. sometimes half moon, sometimes slinky style. I was drunk as hell one night, and so was my friend. He said he wanted to learn how to weld. I told him my techniques in 30 seconds or so, and he did the most flawless weld. It's not a hard thing to do.

Hahaha ya not difficult. I rest my left hand on whatever is nearby...my knee, a table, project, w/e, then use it as a rest for my right with the gun and go. Aluminum with a spool gun is fun. IDK what it is about aluminum but with practice, it just looks awesome.

When I get back to school where we have the mig with spool gun and correct shielding gas (I believe straight argon) I'll try it.
