The tighter the spring, the more resistant it is to climb in gear ratio...so it will keep the RPM higher. if you have it too loose your ratio will jump too quick and bog down the engine.

My gokart did that after it sat for a couple months and the low speed jet was partially clogged and the high speed was totally plugged up with varnish.

Sounds very lean. Either clean your jets (use a guitar string to punch any junk through and follow with compressed air) or you need to go up in jet size (with your air filter and manifold). Any time you adjust the air in or air out, you affect the A/F mixture.

DOM is good stuff. Thats what my jeep's roll cage is made of and it is some very hard steel. Definitely will work for you.
