Kinda forgot all about Oma and Opa.....Thanks for reminding me. That's what we called granpa and granny on my dad's side. Opa was ahead of his time in that he was one of the very few people who raised black Angus cows 50 years ago around here.

Congrats, glad everyone is doing ok. Wow, the little boy really is alittle boy but, that's to be expected I suppose...

Opa? Granpa? I WISH! The only reason I didn't get "grumpy" is because my brother took it first so, my children, in their infinite wisdom, decided I would be GRUMPS... :toetap05:

Thanks for all the congratulations.

This weather sucks and it's got me screwed. I have to go to court Saturday morning on city code violations. The plan was to get the place looking really good and getting the code violations out of sight and calling in the code inforcement officer to look everything over before then so he could testify on my behalf.

This all went down in September. One of the things was a junk vehicle violation. The other was junk. I got rid of all the junk and the offending vehicle. In the time since, I have reaccumulated some junk and now have 2 junk vehicles. One is the one I drive- the inspection is out. The other is my second car - tags and inspection are now out. It's a 2002 Ford Escort. My plan was to move it to a neighbor's.

Since I got the notice for trial 10 days ago we've had cold and rain and now it's been snowing since I got up this morning. It's 20° f and not going above freezing long enough to get rid of the snow until after court. So moving the car isn't going to work as the tracks are liable to draw attention to it. It's also going to be nearly impossible to get everything else straightened up.

So I guess I'll just have to do the best I can in court with what I have and hope that the question of whether I'm code compliant as of then doesn't come up. However- as long as the cars aren't there and I get just a few more things moved- technically, I will be code compliant. So while I can't rely on the code officer, I might be able to pull it off with my cellphone! That and trying to steer the attention to the fact that I complied to all the issues under the citation may just work......

Does the escort run and drive? If it does then I don't know how they can say its a junk vehicle.

That's the law. Any vehicle not registered ( lisence plates ) and currently State inspected is considered a "junk vehicle". What's worse is "trash/ junk". That's where it gets really slippery.

Are you a hoarder or something. How much junk do you have in your yard. It just sounds a bit extreme to drag you to court

Yes I am. But there was other stuff going on. Mainly this was over the truck. Too long a story to go into but it was that and some temporary items that were only in the yard a few days.

So to explain this a little better. That was my project truck I spent $4000 and 5 years gathering parts for off EBay. I had just started working on it a few weeks earlier. Most of the frame was hand sanded and the bed reskinned.

At the same time, I had just remodeled a stair and all the demo and scrap from that was in a pile in the driveway. It had been there 2 days and I was cutting it up/ pulling nails, scavenging what was worth repurposing and getting the rest ready for haul- off. On the side was a stack of materials for another construction project. The week before, my neighbor gave me a porch swing- but it was in the front yard because I couldn't get it on the porch by myself and wasn't 100% sure I wanted it there. Two days prior he replaced his washer and working dryer. They were in the front yard because I was going to fix the washer and flip them both without dragging them to the back yard.

The code officer had been called out to a neighbor's because of his next door neighbor. So my place looked just about as bad as it ever has at just the exact right (wrong) time. I got a Certified letter giving me 10 days to comply. Eight days later I called him up and asked him to come out and talk about the truck ( everything else was cleaned up and looking good). He said "I see what you are doing and I've already removed you - you're fine."

So the truck actually just sat for a month or so as I was doing other things (including refurbing the Manco). I got another Certified letter and figured it was something else but found out it was a court summons for the original code violations! I called him and he denied ever saying what he did and accused me of failing to do ANYTHING about that first notice.

The best I can figure is since the neighbors who instigated all this still had issues someone somewhere brought up the fact my truck was still there and this guy got his butt chewed and didn't have a good explanation. BTW- both of those buthos have moved now- but the damage is done.

You have to go to court for that? If they tried that over here they'd need to have a separate court running 6 days a week...

That's a bit rough
And your yard doesn't even look untidy

Fabroman
Yea in aus u would just get a fine straight out just because Someone mentioned your name
Or u can make an enquiry to the shire
Then in 3 months they will send the fine back and a court date for 4 months down the track
Pretty sure here's it's more like your guilty untill u prove innocence

Well the place I get my truck inspected was out of gas so I went to the place across the street from city hall. After shooting the breeze with a guy there, he told me that a vehicle over 25 years old is exempt from this!

What's worse is that I asked about this from the start and I got- "I'll check into that and get back with you. ...." I may object to the prosecutor's case when it comes to that point and ask that an original copy of the statutes be introduced as evidence as opposed to an abbreviated copy.....

Don't know- court is always a crap shoot- especially in small towns where judges blatantly ignore the points of law. ....been there - done that. And I wonder why they call them "Kangaroo Courts" around here.....

Well what a sucky day in court.....I hope the judge is enjoying the meal his buddy the prosecutor bought him.

Shoulda known better than to even try.....I didn't help that I got there at 9:15 dressed just warm enough to make it from the car to the courtroom- only to wait in a line for 30 minutes before I could get inside.....REALLY? Maybe you podunks should hold court more than one day a month. ....I finally got into court at 2:30. Needless to say, after all that waiting without breakfast or nicotine my mind wasn't the sharpest. I had the prosecutor on the ropes a couple of times but I just couldn't focus. The judge was no help -( to me )- but helped his buddy out...... One thing that really irked me was when the prosecutor introduced the letters first mailed to me concerning the violations. I put on my readers and honest to God not 3 seconds after I got them in my hand- the SOB asked me if I had any objections. .....I gave him the hand and said "one moment. ...." but honestly, it rattled me and objecting to them would have been a strong point in my defense. I didn't- because I only scanned them and felt pressure to answer quickly. Objecting to those as copies and taken out of context of the full statutes would have opened the door to have the REAL rule book admitted.

The prosecutions whole case was a photograph, those warning letters, and the officer's testimony. His testimony in a nutshell was this: he saw the violations, snapped the photo, got busy and didn't come back for several months- only to find NOTHING had changed.

So under cross I asked him if he happened to remember a phone call from me asking him to revisit the property some 8 days after the ten day notice. Suddenly he recalled that. I asked him if any of the other code violations besides the truck still remained. He said no- the property was completely clean. Then I asked him if he recalled me asking him directly about the truck and him telling me everything was fine. Uhuh- amnesia again.....

I then went on to ask him if the city codes had any special provisions for antique vehicles over 25 years old. He went on to spout some crap about Texas state statutes. I asked if he was aware that Ft. Worth had exemptions for 25 yr old vehicles. The prosecution immediately objected saying it wasn't Ft.Worth and it was sustained. So I asked- but you did quote Texas statutes, correct? So I followed up- sir, you didn't answer my question- does White Settlement make any special provisions for antique vehicles or are all vehicles considered equal under the code laws.

He said- well, I don't know, I don't have the book in front of me. So I said- then the short answer is you don't know. By this time the prosecutor had found something in the Texas vehicle code and asked me if I had registered it as an antique vehicle. I said no. Two BIG problems with this- I was just too brain dead to realize and act on at the time. TOTALLY improper court procedure for him to ask ME a question during cross-examination and totally irrelevant because I wasn't beeing tried by the state of Texas.

I also had a brain fert on the photograph as I meant to raise on cross if he had been out 3 times and nothing had changed how come he didn't have 3 photos?

Anyway- I got him to admit he had given false testimony under direct examination, exposed serious doubt as to the credibility of the legality of the charge........

And I decided to take the stand....immediately after being cross-examined, I was found guilty. WHAT? What the hell happened to closing arguments? You know- where you take all the holes you have punched in the opposition and tie them up in a neat package? Where you point out the omissions in the other guys case? What a friggin joke. Anyway- bad as I botched it I think a REAL judge would have found reasonable doubt. I hate small town courts.......rant over.....

Well it's crappy around here. ....Yesterday we got a steady light drizzle with sub-freezing temperatures that turned the bridges into glare ice. In Dallas a 14 year veteran firefighter was trying to help some people who had an accident and fell off the overpass 40 feet to his death. He left behind a wife and child. The details are a little sketchy. I think they said he was 40 but I could be confusing how far he fell with his age but he was in that range.

This morning there was an accident between a car and a propane truck. They didn't give any more details other than it was a fatal accident.

Me- I've got coffee, smokes, beer and food. I have some work 2 doors down the street with a 100, 000 btu propane heater that makes that place warmer than my house. Sometimes you just have to stop and give thanks for being truly blessed......

Well it's official- I hate springs....and myself. ....my garbage disposal is on the fritz. I found one in the dumpster at work. Same exact model. I took it home and hooked up an extension cord to it.....nothing. I was hoping maybe it was just locked up and whoever threw it away didn't know how to free it up.

So this morning I hook it back up and get a hum. I tear it apart and see the problem. The bottom part of the disc that the flailers ride on is rusted through allowing water to get to the motor. I decided to give it a shot. I had to grind the nut off down to the threads on two sides to take it off. Then I took the plate to the bench grinder and took it down to shiny metal with a wire wheel. I turned my wire welder down all the way and as soon as I touched it with the electrode it made a hole.

I remembered a bucket handle that was laying in the garden. I made a ring and laid it on the rusted seam. I welded the wire untill it turned molten. It was hot enough to fuse to the metal below it without burning through. After a little while- it got to the point I just used the wire straightened out like you do with one of those high dollar welders (tig maybe?) where you stick a wire into the arc....It wasn't pretty but it worked. I then flipped it over and laid a bead on the other side. Now it's grinding time.

Anyway- there was some kind of centrifugal mechanism on the armature. I reached for my phone to shoot some pics- but it was inside the house. ...so I just went for it. I took off the springs, counterweights, and assembly and took the armature to the bench grinder for cleanup and polishing.

I put it all back together but it didn't seem to be right. I took it apart and studied it and decided it had to be right. So I went to put it back together and one of the springs slipped....... Kazzinnngggg- gone forever. ... It was then I realized my problem- I was trying to put it on the wrong side of the armature. ...DOHH!

So tomorrow I will pull the one under the sink and scavenge it for one lousy spring.....sometimes beeing Poboy sucks- but those things are like $80!
