Ima gonna build a Slingshot

It's gonna be made out of go kart parts
...so, I guess it would be a mini-Slingshot ;)

There's basically (3) parts to it
...the front end
...the cock pit
...& the tail

Ima gonna start with the "3rd member"(does anyone remember that term?)

SAM_2056.JPG
The rear axle will consist of
...a nut
...the left bearing
...a spacer
...the brake drum
...a spacer
...the wheel
...a spacer
...the sprocket
...a spacer
...the right bearing
...& another nut

Next, gotta do some measurements to be able to design/create a bracket or "housing" to mount "all that stuff" into

Oh yea, the motor is gonna be mounted right ahead of the rear tire.

After doin' some measurin'
...& some mock ups

I cut some pipe
...& started bendin'

I did the (2) side's first
...tried to get 'em as close as possible

Then, bent up a "top" to connect the (2) side's

I used some 5/8" tube, as "alignment pins"
...& to help strengthen them connection "joints"

The bearing brackets & motor mount will be made outta some 10g steel (a bit thicker than 1/8")

The bearing brackets will be a bit over-sized, to accommodate for the brake band mounting hardware
...& the motor mount will be a bit over-sized too, to help strengthen the whole rear assembly

I lined up (2) of the bearing bracket pieces & clamped 'em together
...then, drilled (3) 1/8" "pilot holes" (2) for the 5/16" mounting bolts & (1) for the 2 1/4" "big hole"
SAM_2121.JPG
Now, I just gotta align them
...& get 'em welded on ;)

Ima using 1/2" Schedule 40 steel pipe (7/8" OD x 5/8" ID x 1/8" wall
Oh wow. I always heard pipe is way to heavy. Is schedule 40 light enough to work with? I ask because I’m tempted to buy a pipe bender from harbor freight because tube benders are way expensive

I've made many karts out of regular old water pipe
... check out some of My Metal ;)

I got the bearing brackets
...& the "hinge tube", welded on

Then, made up a chain
...& reassembled everything

So then, I could align the motor mount plate
...& get 'er welded on, too

* I also, measured, marked & cut the axle
...then, cleaned up the cut
...& beveled the edge

But, when I tried threading the end, it didn't go so well :(

It was real difficult to even get the die, to start cutting
...& then, when it did start to "grab"
...I couldn't keep the axle from turning too

So, plan B
...I just drilled a hole
...& installed a "roll pin" :cheers2:

I almost forgot, I welded in a short piece of 1" square tube (forgot to take a pic) :(
...but, it strengthens the brake band mounting bolt/assembly area
...& is a built in spacer too (for holding the brake band where it needs to be)

Then, re-assembled everything, again, to triple check that everything worked together & as anticipated ;)

Yup, seems good to me

Next, dis-assemble everything (again)
...double check the welds
...& then, some smoothin', deburrin' & cleanin' :cheers2:

I got the "tail" pretty well smoothed & cleaned

Next, is to seal 'er up so, I wiped 'er down with some paint thinner
...primed 'er with some self etching primer (for bare metal)
...wet sanded 'er with some 320 sand paper
...wiped 'er down again
...& then painted 'er a nice satan black ;)

Yup, we used to pull them out out, weld spider gears to side gears and then drop in a 1/4 Plate and weld the gears to carrier solid , redneck spool:sifone:
