thanks guys!!!!!

i brought it back from school today so i can work on it again! I'm thinking i may try to switch to a foot operated brake to clear up the handle bars, and make it a bit safer/easier to use.

i probably spent a day or two after school cutting the pipe for the main frame, then beveling the edges. no clue how long all the little pieces took.

i was thinking about the kick start. the engine has a 4.1:1 built-in reduction with clutch, and i was thinking if i bolted a bike free wheel onto part of the reduction i could attach a kick start lever to the free wheel. so that way the kick start would have about a 4:1 reduction, so a half revolution kick would get the engine 2 revolutions, then once it started the free wheel would disengage so the lever wouldn't spin. i'm not sure, but i bet the free wheel could handle a max of 1250rpm, if i remember correctly brendonv put a free wheel on an engine which would spin at 3600rpm or more.

i'm not sure, but there are two ways of hooking it up to the reduction, one easy, one not so. the not so easy way wouldn't need it in gear, but i'm not sure about the easy way. i'll go look at some vids! not sure if i mentioned it, but i think a kick stand is really needed, i think i will try to make one because none of the ones i have (that i know about) will work that great.

hmm, looks like it may be the more challanging way..... might be worth doing it a different way.

i could bolt a sprocket to the crank shaft, run a chain to a free wheel on a mini jack shaft, then hook kick start up to mini js.

or maybe like this,

I just looked at your pics of the sides. I don't know where you'd hook that kicker into it.

was thinking this side,

i could either drill a hole in the side cover, or make a new side cover with a hole in it.

i'll make a little drawing of what i have in mind later.

well i spent today in school thinking about what to do with this. first, i'm going to gas it up and see just how bad it is to push/ride down big hill start. if that doesn't work (considering how hard it is to push, i kinda doubt it will, but the addition of oil and a big hill might do it) i will have to work on a starting system.

1.recoil: this might be the best option, it would be relativly simple and cheep to make. but would be in the way a bit, and isn't as classy as kick start, but it would get the job done.

i was thinking a jack shaft that bolted up to the engine crank, then a pulley with a rope wrapped around it bolted to a free wheel on the js. or instead of a free wheel i could make my own recoil clutch.

2.e-start: this is probably no easier than kick start to assemble, no to mention more cost ands weight, sooo, no.

3.kick start: has some style to it! will be more challangine to assemmble than the pull start. shouldn't cost much.

if i made the kick start i was thinking maybe i could make it so the kick start lever had gears on it that messhed with the gears on the engine, kinda like the old b&s kick start.

or i could do a complicated method using 2 small jack shafts, a few sprockets, and a free wheel. the free wheel could go on the engine, or the kick starter, i would need a few extra sprockets to run the free wheel on the js, but it might be worth it for the lower rpm.

another possobility is making it just like the one in the pic i posted.

lastly i could use the gear reduction already on the engine, bolt on a free wheel, then make a kick stand that lifted it off the ground so the clutch could still be engaged while starting.

another addition i'm considering is making the brakes operated by a foot pedal.

it would clear up the bars, and the brake lever i have now isn't that big which = not much leverage.

poop, so i won the science fair a few weeks ago, but now the school is sending me to the regoinal science fair and i'm not aloud to do anything with the minibike until MAY!!!!!!! riding included!!!!!!!!!! :furious2:. plus i need to basically re-type my report which was the most boring thing i could do on the whole project! its on a weekend too......

maybe i will try to work on my kart, try to keep it from flipping over and bouncing all over the road, then having keys fall out while i'm as far from my house as possible.
i'm thinking:
buy old racing kart and an engine, then tear the engine down and mod the crap out of it.
or
use parts from my kart and/or transform my kart into an off-road kart.
or
do not in the way of building stuff and just focus on something else for a month+

i don't even want to think about if i win the regionals, i wont be able to use this thing until mid august!!!!!

I JUST WANT TO RIDE!

ahh man.

my kart goes all over the road too...... almost flips sometimes!

old engines to restore and modify are fun and cheap, IMO look for the parts first, im having trouble finding a tecumseh H60 billet rod......

thanks.

prizes, from what i can tell they give you a little trophy that says 1st or something on it.

yea, i'm still kinda annoyed about the no riding for a month, and the having to type another report.

i'm really considering making an off road kart, maybe two seats (would be two tiny seats so it would fit in atv trails) big tires, maybe full Independent suspension, roll cage, and however much power i can get. off course all of that is unlikely to happen :/

id like to make some independant suspension rig, but that idea lasted a few days, it would have costed thousands.

why do they not want you to ride it??

that would involve the use of gas, too dangerous, don't ask me how any of this is making sense. i looked at the regulations, from what i can see i have like 5 things that should be disqualifying me, but somehow they are having me go anyway?

personally, i would kinda prefer to be successful at the school fair and then be happy with that, but my parents and teacher REALLY want me to go even though it seems like i'm disqualified.

i'm just kinda confused about this and like i said, i just want to ride!

as for the kart, the scorpion i have now, quite frankly is very unstable, and has horrible handling, it has been flipped once already (i'm fine), i also kinda feel i spent too much.... i have even considered selling it/parting it out, but i would hate to do that, even though it is the way it is.

i interested in making an off road thing because, well unless i have a track, off road seems to be more fun, no looking for SUV's tailgating me, pot holes that send me flying off the road, or angry neighbors who might call the cops.

all that said i still enjoy riding my kart, that is when its working, no matter how much lock-tite i use, the set screw comes loose and the key falls out while i'm a nice long walk uphill away from my house, and no, sticks do not work as temporary keys :/

man i feel like i'm complaining too much and i hate it! (great now i'm complaining about complaining...... wait, ohhh come on, more complaining!)

as for the off road kart i was thinking of buying an old, maybe 250cc+ (or whatever i can get) ATV then using it as a parts vehicle.

i am leaning towards a 2 seat, but i would like it to fit on ATV trails.

maybe double or single a-arm front suspension, then chain driven trailing arm IRS, maybe u-joints or (dreaming here) CV's if i can get a hold of some.

only thing about building an off road kart like that is that i would have to worry about running out of places to ride., so maybe something a little smaller would be better.

over all, i'm probably just dreaming here, if only i had someone i could ride and build stuff with......

get an ody

or build a sidewinder

it does involve more money and doesnt have irs but will work great

if u put irs u need some serious power to make the extra cost worthy

for 250 to 450 irs is a waste unless u are jumping

everyone on this site should make a vacation house on an island and well all go there and have one big huge race!!

well. i try to keep by builds on the small enough side so they fit in the SUV. (no trailer)

mini bikes are great because they are easy to fit in the car...

and for go karts, NO roll cages because i have like 4-5' clearance for the car if that (never measured height...)

i'm not sure i have the space to drive a sidewinder :/. i'm kinda interested in building something myself, but i might get an ody (if i do anything).
i was thinking IRS just because its cool, and its a challenge.

like i said, not sure if i have room to ride something like this, if i even make anything.

i have a small sand pit, i short stretch of dirt road, and a handful of atv trails to scoot around on, other than that i would need to transport it, which i have no decent way of doing.

maybe something like the dirt devil or shredder, accept 2 seater so i can drive stuff around with some of my friends.
