Ok, subject shift: Why do young people think it's cool for their vehicles to backfire? What's the deal with that?

My deal is with the current trend of super loud NASCAR mufflers. Gone are the days of a nice glass-pack burble, these things are raucous to the extreme. I understand why (knuckle-dragging neanderthals) but HOW?

It's annoying, but I remember being an annoying dumba$$ when I was young. The retarded extremely loud sound systems I had. Would rattle house windows with the bass. Grew out of that in my mid twenty's and would just put a nice sounding system with a 10" inch sub in. No more rattling shyt.

But I never had a backfiring rice burner crackling annoying exhaust.

Guess I can't upload a video. Working on a 2018 Grand Chrokee, 3.6L V6, had two DTCs P0456 small evap leak detected and P0440 General Evap failure. We'll the purge line under the engine cover was broken because, let's put a piece of plastic on an engine that will break down overtime from vibrations and high heat, as well as cold cycles. So got that replaced, no big deal. Did the PCM Evap verification test, and it failed. Well turns out because this vehicle has spent a good time driving on gravel roads, the ESIM and ESIM vapor filter have ingested quite a bit of dust.

So I told my advisor and he had me wait until a senior tech came in and had him verify it all with me. He agreed. So ordered the parts for it. Well advisor was mad for whatever reason and its like, this is why I said fix the purge line and continue diagnosis. He's mad because the MOPAR ESIM is like $314. That senior tech and I looked it up online, you can get that ESIM same P/N for like $20. That's how much markup dealers put on stuff. Customer price, $164.

Or what you can do is, you can turn it into a flea. A harmless little flea. Then you put that flea into a box, and you put that box into another box and mail it to yourself. Then when it gets there you SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER!

In all seriousness though, working on modern vehicles is such a physical and mental drain. Add in working with advisors and managers that just don't care and have to suck up to the customers, I see why techs are leaving in droves.

Wife's 06 escape decided it didnt want to "go to sleep". Wake up in the morning to a dead battery. Took it to 2 dealerships. They said nothing wrong. I said then why do I get a dead battery every morning. They had no answer.

Took it to a buddy that runs a good shop. He has all the top end diagnostic computers. He sat with me and went through everything. I was amazed at what his computers were digging into. But still couldn't find the issue.

Even after sitting for the 33 minutes for it to "go to sleep" it still sat awake. It shut down some but still had a few amps drawing. He had no answer but was kind enough to print me a full schematic from the all data.

I poured over that for the next few weeks. Testing, un plugging stuff, you know the drill.

Finally found it in the SJB or BCM. A timer IC chip failed. I opened the module only to find many, double layer SMD boards. Nothing I could do.

Found a used SJB and had to go back to the dealer so they could flash it in.

They gave me a hard time cause "I didnt know what I was talking about" they had run a full diagnosis with no problems.

I told them to just flash the module in.
I had the panels removed and all they had to do was swap the harness plug.

Guess what. I fixed the problem.
Only took like 6 months.

I missed the start of this topic, I think. Sounds fascinating. Chilled gas and oil will surely help on those hot days, helps keep the motor cool.

I forget where the idea came from, other than knowing that Yeti coolers are stupid expensive for what they are. But it does give you perspective on what one can achieve within the Yeti cooler budget and still have room for food and drinks.

Guys... Any reason to NOT grind a notch in a flywheel key to advance timing a bit on a mildly modded/ported predator?

I came across someone yesterday who runs their 212 without a key at all...

A notched key? No issue, just load the key with the flywheel so it seats in rotation direction.
If your going no key you better have the taper lapped and use a degree wheel for accuracy.

I came across someone yesterday who runs their 212 without a key at all...

Rather common among the gearheads. I think the prerequisite is lapping the flywheel to the crank for the best possible fit and mating between the two, and then the flywheel nut is what holds it all together and in time AND can hold it more precisely because they’re lapped.

I guess the neophyte opinion on unlapped flywheels was that you could have the nut basically hand tight or “good enough” but not to worry because the key was what really held it all together. Nope, the key is for timing.

The torque value applied to the nut on a lapped flywheel is then more critical than before, so use that torque wrench.

Am I right?
