Has anyone ever tried to run a briggs off propane? I don't think it would be very hard to do. This is how I would go about convering it:

1. Remove gas tank and take off the 2 tubes that come down from the carb then plug up the holes.

2. Get a propane bottle (those coleman camping ones that are like 6" long) and a screw in adapter thing for the tank.

3. Get some copper tubing and a valve to limit the flow. also another valve for cutoff

4. Take out the screw for the main jet (not just the needle the little hex bolt that holds it in as well) and get a fitting to attatch the copper tube to it.

5. Put both valves on the copper pipe (on/off and mixture)

6. Attatch the tank screw in adapter to the copper pipe

7. Turn the on/off valve to on and start engine.

8. Tune the mixture screw for best performance

9. After turning off engine, close on/off valve (that way you dont have to mess up your mixture)

Heres a crappy little diagram thing: (= indicates pipe)

Tank with fitting===on/off valve===mixture valve===carb main
jet hole

So, what do you think?:toetap05:

Actually, an injector wouldn't be that expensive. Just find a cheap throttle body or even efi setup (I'm talking stock, not one of those outragously expensive FAST kits out there) and modify to suit your needs. If you have access to a shop or a person that junks cars, just ask to take what you need off and maybe offer a little cash or something in exchange. Try it, and like risto said, I'll be safely waiting over here.

It shouldn't be too dangerous. Propane is more stable than gas.

However, it will be quite bad if it backfires thru the carb :worried2:

I believe there are kits to convert generators that use similar 5 to 6HP engines that would probably work well on any motor of a similar size.

Search "generator propane conversion" on Google. Lots of kits and parts available.

That is unless there is a hole or something in the tank...but you are correct.

Yup it's correct. If any of yall know Davidsfarm, he used a propane tank, opened up a bit and lit it. Used it as a flamethrower to burn off the bees on his cars.

EDIT - What are you doin this for anyways? Unlike you're using this engine indoors...

Propane is higher octane and burns cleaner than gas,it makes more power, better mileage, cheaper, they do propane conversions on some mountain sleds because at high altitude you lose ALOT of HP so you need as much as possible.

I forgot about that...isn't it like 110 octane or something? I do, however, remember that you get slightly less mileage due to something that's different than gas....Super Chevy magazine did a conversion in an early 90's issue on an sbc, but the same concept applies here. I'll have to see if I can find it and I'll post the article.

Couldn't find the article, but found this on a conversion site:
Because propane has a lower volumetric energy density than gasoline, your car on propane will use more fuel. You can conservatively estimate that your car on propane will have 75% of its gasoline mileage or use 33% more propane than gasoline. With your total estimated annual driving, your should be able to calculate the amount of propane you will use annually and then calculate the number of years the conversion will pay for itself.
