But....looking at this next set of pictures....you'll notice the bottom of the tailgate doesn't exactly match the tailight profile.....also....apparently...the top of the bedrails have been spread.....

Yeah....guilty!!!!!.....I'm anal when it comes to being a perfectionist!!!!

Amazing how you became "anal" in 2 posts!

Anyway a ratchet strap should pull those bed rails into place.

Where is your Rear bumper?

You should talk...you were anal from post one!

No ratchet strap...believe it or not....I have pipe clamps long enough to get the job done....

And yeah....I was thinking the same thing about the rear bumper....I at least GOTTA have a hitch! !!!!

I thought I did not see them. They would have been handy for pullin the rails back together.

Soooo....The outer skin is ready for wet sanding....and the inner for welding ....we'll talk more about that shortly....(particularly how I deal with the pic 3 situation) !

OOOH! That is gonna be an issue. Hmmm...
Got any ideas.

Oh....yeah, no issue...."Poboy tig welding "....trying out rebar tie wire instead of coathangers this time...

---------- Post added at 08:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:35 PM ----------

What I do is start on one side of the gap....(with my cheapo HF mig)...and as it starts to melt the sheetmetal...I stick wire into the puddle...it cools the weld puddle...(to keep it from just making a bigger hole...and builds material towards the other side of the gap....

Sounds crazy....but it works!

Ok....sooo...not pretty, but you can see how the gap is getting closed....
Also..the soft malleable steel in the "composite" weld should make reworking the welds a touch easier....

SO... still not pretty, but you can see the gap getting closed....Now, at this point you can see how easy it would be to fill the pinholes with spot welds, but....I'm probably just gonna go over it with Bondo. (or duct tape) ....

Looking good, but
No Bondo.
This is your tailgate... Work bench... Table... Seat... Plus it moves and slams and takes a beating. I would just keep filling the holes with the welder and then grind off the rough spots. Bondo will crack off and then Texas rain will get in there and rust out the tailgate.

Looking a lot better, I think you could have pulled the bed rails in from the tail gate striker plates if you didn't have stake pockets.
I must say you put a whole lot of work into not buying a $100 tailgate.
I like it. keep at it, you will get it.
You know a chevy tailgate wouldn't have bent so easily, might not have even gotten scratched.

Ahhhh....you're ignorance is showing! Look closer...(and I'm not sure which thread you were reading...)...sourcing a $100 tailgate for this truck is as close to being impossible as powering a rocket to the moon with a governored 212cc Predator.

And the tailgate was hit by a forklift ....a Chebby would have folded up like dollar store aluminum foil....(also...NO stake pockets on this fairly rare pickup.)

And...look again...my truck doesn't have a bumper!
