old B&S 3 hp engine

i have no idea but its old enough to have an oil bath...the logo on it is the diamond and black and white, so i dont know how old or what model number it is

Oil bath? If its old enough to have an oil bath air cleaner I wouldnt mess with it.

That's a Briggs 2HP. Most likely a common 60102 model. Oil bath are on all the 2HP's I know of.

3HP's use a more complex diaphram carburetor + much bigger fuel tank, as with a foam air filter.

What size is shaft? 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch?
Appears to be a 5s (rated at 1.0 hp) or a 6s (rated at 1.5 hp).
May possibly be a model 8 (rated at 2.5 hp) but carb and blower housing is wrong.
What does id plate say?

Oh whoops, my bad. Affair driven is correct. It's a 5s/6s model. Didn't notice the shroud type. Darn box!

As a teenager, I tried to press into use a B/S 5s on my minibike, and although it worked, I couldn't wait to get my less-old 6b back up and running (messed up magneto/coil). These things just weren't very powerful, and as a "kick-in-the-performance-groin" they were heavier than their more modern KoolBore counterparts. As stationary utility motors, they excelled.
I have two of them, and although I'll never use them in a project- I'll always keep them.

The intake ports are TINY though, I'd love to see a "racing" 5s/6s. Now... where can I buy a CNC, mill, and lathe?

CNC mill and Lathe. I just sent them to you in a envelope. CNC mill is 180 grand+ and Lathe is around there.

WOW, without the milk-crate, that engine in the picture looks EXACTLY like engine I just scored from an old edger at a yard sale!!! Air cover and everything looks just like it, and it gets oil in the air filter after running it for a while. The engine cover is SO rusty that I can not tell anything about it, but it runs and idles great!

How old are these? 20, or 30 years old? So how many HP? I see 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5HP mentioned, but does anyone know for sure? I'm not worried about it being too weak at all, as I'm putting it on a new bicycle trailer geared to go only 25mph, but it would be nice to have a clue of the HP.

Also, it appears to have a 5/8 shaft, so it should fit a clutch.

Zakman, good luck with your engine, I'm sure you will put it to good use. If it's not powerful enough, there is a 2.5HP 79cc OHV engine at Harbor Freight tools that would do, but I would try to use your old engine first.

Anyone know how much HP these old B&S have?

Stick a long screwdriver down the sparkplug hole and measure the stroke. If it's 1.5", then it's a "5", which is good for 1- 1.5hp. If the stroke is 2", then it's a "6", which is in the 1.5- 2 hp range. These motors were built in (I think) the late 40's to late 50's.
Not real "performers", but interesting, none-the-less.

6S, 6SFB, 6SR6 1.2 to 1.6 hp @ 2200 to 3200 rpm
5S .83 to 1.00 hp @ 2200 to 2800 rpm
Built 1949 through 1957. First horizontal aluminum block built 1955 and was a 6bhs.

The metal fan cover on mine doesn't have the same shape as these engines, it's more square at the top near the cylinder and round at the bottom. It's probably a variation of the 6S.

1HP-1.6HP should be enough for slow speeds right? I was figuring, for Zakman's go-kart, or my bike trailer, that 3600RPM at 20 or 25mph should be a proper gearing. Any input on this?
