What I would like to do I something along The same lines as the suspension. I know he doesn't need suspention or for it to go fast now but in the future I would like to be ableto have the option without having to spend more money or fabricate more parts. I plan on putting some sort of a mechanical governor, whether it's at the pedal or a stop on the butterfly for the carb. I would rather not dish out the money for the torque converter, if I have to why will. What is the benefit of the jack shaft aside from reducing the size of the drive sprocket?

Do NOT make a stop for the pedal or the governor. That is the worst thing you could do. It stops the engine reaching full revs and your clutch never gets the chance to lock up properly. This creates friction and your clutch has a half life of 10 seconds.

If you want to reduce spead, the best way to do it is through gearing. Daisan is right

Thanks guys. this is the kind of info i joined and posted for. so can i get way with a CC and a jack shaft geared down. or should i dish out the cash for a TC and a jack shaft geared down? like i've said before he is young and doesn't need much to make him happy now but i want to be able to tweak it for him fairly easily and cheaply as he get older.

If I had the cash to do a project like this, I would go with a Torque converter and a jackshaft. That way, you can have adjustable speed at the throttle, and an easy way to change the ratio later when he needs more speed. I have a very similar kart, except with smaller tires, and a centrifugal clutch. I plan at some point in the future to upgrade to a torque converter.

A TC is really good if you are going to be doing offroading a lot. A centrifugal clutch is good for mainly onroad riding. It basically all comes down to preferance. A centrifugal clutch only has one ratio (it is either engaged or not engaged). A TC had variable ratios.

If you don't want to spend the money, I would just go for the centrifugal clutch and jackshaft. It will work fine. You could always upgrade at a later date.

Just remember with a TC you can gear slightly higher than with a centrifugal clutch and still be fine

Well I've already dumped way too much money into this truck so as long as it will work I think I will go With a centrifugal clutch and a jack shaft. I have to do a little research to see what I can get for sprockets. Next question. I would like to mount the motor to the frame as opposed to the swing arm. As long as I mount the jack shaft in line with the pivot point on the swingarm there shouldn't be an issue with that correct?

Correct, in fact, what some people do is use the jackshaft to mount the swingarm. This would of course require you to use a 1" shaft to mount your swingarm, but that never hurt anyone.

With a centrifugal clutch, you will just have to make sure you gear it low enough. It will never perform as well as a TC offroad though, but it will work

Cool build man eventually I'm going to build something similar I'll be watching this one for sure. The cc will hold up as long as you gear it correctly my dingo has big tires on it and I run a cc out in dads hilly woods and it works fine.

well, spent more time at the steel yard today. picked up some plate/sheet for the "floor" and misc flats for brakets. spent a little time fabbing the shock mounts. desided to go with side by side shocks so ill have to order four more. Question, rubber mounting the engine. Good idea/bad idea? Won't get much done tomorrow, but for good reason. Going to go see the real thing. MONSTER JAM at the speedway. OH Yeah!!!!

Great show. Spent a lot of time looking at and taking pictures of the trucks durin the pit party. I feel like I am succeeding in making it closely resemble the real thing. I also got a lot of ideas and inspiration. Didn't really do any "work" after the show just spent some time looking at it and going over things in my head. Anyways here is a few pics. Mocked up final ride height and stance. And the shock mounts.

thanks. he's the one. final height will be about 58" and he measures in at a massive 44", so yeah he'll need his climbing boots.
