what about a ford inline 6 300? here you can get one off craigslist for nothing in running condition

not a lot of HP and not great on gas, but lasts forever, reliable, simple, and tons of torque.

my truck has one and its been on the road for over 20 years and so many miles that it's outlived the odometer. never hesitates, fires up every time. best engine ever

no idea how hard it would be to swap

No kidding. Move up here, and then tell me about no glow plugs...

Any of the major diesel manufacturers last a dang long time with due care and maintenance. As far as Cummins' in Dodge-
BECAUSE THEY HAVE A CONTRACT! And- Cummins ain't perfect, neither-

"In 2008, Cummins was a named defendant in a class action suit relating 1998-2001 model year Chrysler Dodge Ram trucks, model 2500 or 3500, originally equipped with a Cummins ISB 5.9 liter, diesel engine built using a pattern 53 Block.[4] The case has been settled but some qualified Chrysler owners may receive $500 for repairs to the block, which was alleged to crack and create a coolant leak." -Stolen from the Cummins Wiki entry...

Seriously- you're perfectly entitled to your opinion. Right or wrong. But I doubt you've walked this earth long enough to have any experience with this stuff...

a cummins uses a engine block heater for cold starts when its cold but they use nothing to help them start in the clinder i no the difference between direct injection and indirect and a good deaisil engine doesnt use glow plugs
fail. you seem to know nothing about cummins if you think they just use a block heater for when they are cold. they have a grid heater on the intake. now before you start making more of an a$$ out of yourself do some research.

i know about them i have one

Just because you own one doesnt mean jack ****. Please try to stay on topic here. No one gives a flip about your cummins right now, we are not here to argue about glow plugs, because quite frankly, it has nothing to do with the reliability of the motor. I like cummins motors a lot, but i also like the 7.3 powerstroke. just because you own it doesnt mean its the best.

IMO the best swap you could do for that jeep would be a 4.3 chevy v6. They make plenty of power for a jeep, they are reliable as hell, and to top it off if you ever felt the need for more power, a chevy 350 will essentially bolt right in place of the 4.3 as long as your tranny will hold it. The 4.3 is the same block as the 350 minus the front two cylinders.

The 4.3 vortec is capable of decent mileage, my friend has a wrangler with a 4.3 5 spd and he could pull 25mpg on the highway with it. a mid 90s 4.3 is pushing somewhere around 190hp, which is plenty to have some fun with.

How 'bout a nice 4.3l Vortec?
Yep, my thoughts too. I have owned, maintained and driven several Vortec-powered trucks and vans over the years. Power is very good, reliability excellent. It is also a very popular Jeep swap in the offroad community.

a A904 or aka 30RH will not put up with the power made by a 350. they are a week transmission unless it is built for heavy duty application.

I would suggest using the engine, tranny and transfer case as a unit from a donor S-Blazer or similar. The ECM and wiring will be required, and will oversee the tranny, too.
