So any thoughts on an ethanol conversion?
no. don't even think about it. even the 10% ethanol that they put in the normal gas is bad for your engine whether you see the side effects or not. now if you want to do a conversion i think the best one you could do is propane. engines will go millions of miles on propane because it burns so clean. plus propane is usually cheaper.

If a real diesel doesnt have glow plugs what does it have?

After asking about the conversion i did some googleing and found out that it was a huge fail. The block would crack due to the high comepresion.

So any thoughts on an ethanol conversion?
a real diesel doesnt have any thing it starts on the comprsion it has cummins dont have glow plugs because there real diesels the duramax and powerstorke aren't because they have glow plugs and they are v8

Seriously, you need to STOP POSTING MISINFORMATION and WRONG FACTS. Having glowplugs doesn't somehow make an engine a fake diesel or some bull****. There is a difference between indirect injection, direct injection, and commonrail diesels, but they all ARE diesels.
Cylinder configuration has NOTHING to do with whether or not an engine is a diesel either. There are diesel engines from one to six cylinder inline, and four to twenty-four cylinder v-configurations.

As other posters have said, you don't really want to convert to ethanol. Besides being rather complicated to do to a non flex-fuel EFI engine, ethanol is hard on rubber and seals, and has lower energy density, so you'll see a 25-30% drop in fuel mileage.

about time someone said it. i hate people who talk out there @$$ about stuff they don't even know. the cummins may not use glow plugs but they do have something elses that does the same thing.

I may see a drop in milage but i can make it for cheap. In the end it does clean the engine and it does burn cleaner. Ive researched it alot. I can do it easily to a carb engine. With the gas lines just replace em with steel lined lines or hard plastic lines. All the gaskets in the engine that the fuel woukd be touching have been replaced with metal gaskets and i could get a new carb thats already set up for ethanol burning. It woukd be no worse than gasoline

Cool, I figured you just wanted to get E85 from the pump for the (government-subsidized) cost savings.

Too bad I can only hit "thanks" once...

Cool diesel? The Detroit V71 series (2 stroke) I wonder if it qualifies... :D

On the ethanol subject (the thread was about converting classic Ford trucks to alternative energy sources. Prices were in the San Francisco area.):

I absolutely HATE ethanol for a variety of reasons.

1) Ethanol contains significantly less energy than gasoline does. Burning one gallon of gasoline will net you 114,000 BTU, while burning one gallon of pure ethanol will only net you 76,100 BTU. So ethanol contains 33.246% less energy than gasoline does. E85 contains only 81,785 BTU per gallon, resulting in a hypothetical gas mileage decrease of 28.259% from 100% gasoline to E85. Moving from E10 to E85 will net you a loss of 25.791%. So if E10 is running you $4.00 a gallon, and you'll save $.50 per gallon by switching to E85, you'll be saving 12.5% per gallon, while burning 25.791% more. You'll actually be losing money by burning more fuel per mile.

2) Ethanol dirtys up oil like no one's business. Toyota (my employer) recommends oil changes every 10k for vehicles running synthetic and every 5k for vehicles running conventional. For Flex-Fuel vehicles running E85, the recommended interval is 2,500 miles. Running E85, you'll spend quite a bit more on oil.

3) Ethanol is hygroscopic and miscible in water. Water+fuel=no good.

LPG isn't much better. It looks like a gallon of LPG will run you around $4.00 or more. LPG contains 84,300 BTU per gallon. So unless LPG burns significantly more efficiently in a IC engine, that too is a waste of money.

CNG is running in the $2.50 range per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE). By my calculations, CNG yields 114,003 BTU per GGE. So it's looking like with current prices, CNG is the only cost effective way to go.

If you can make it, go for it. I'm curious as to why oil change intervals are so different for Flex-Fueled vehicles run on E85. Maybe the burn temperature of ethanol is higher?

a cummins uses a engine block heater for cold starts when its cold but they use nothing to help them start in the clinder i no the difference between direct injection and indirect and a good deaisil engine doesnt use glow plugs
