BTW: I'm going back tomorrow and get that gallon back for $7....off the "OOPS" shelf....Might as well make the most of it while I'm here....we all know where I'm going when I leave.....

I always wanted to do that!
Stupid Morals!

   So what are you doing to eliminate the quotation points that would have a quote pop up automatically in it's own box, versus having it just vanish into the rest of your post??????

-intermediate techno rant-

So just the other day an app stopped working for no reason, so I contacted support and guess what their answer was?! "UPDATE!"
I f* hate updates.. they always cause more harm than good, and "never change a running system" is more than just a good idea IMHO; it's my #1 computer law.

Anywhooo.. my wife thought differently, so I took her Phone (my old iPhone 3GS running on ios 4.3 [I made one update to have background tasks...])
and updated it to whatever shsh blob I still had for it wich happened to be ios 6.1.3..
went alright'ish; but although I made a full backup prior the update all Apps were gone and had to be reinstalled.
(different appleID than mine of course.. so that was forseable)
So, while I was in 'the process' I though why not make a fresh backup of my iPhone as well..
but guess what such 64GB can hold almost 60GB of data... not enough free discspace, so I deleted the old backup and tried to run it... still... not enough disc space (just 2GB missing)
And I had such nasty "other files" labelled stuff on the phone taking up more than 5GB...
googled to find what it was, to get rid of some of that and read an article that stated that my good ol' phone had loaded newer ios-es in the background that take up a good amount of space.
To verify that claim I opened the "softwareupdate" link on my phone and WANTED to scroll down... somehow touched the "update now" button perhaps....Can't say;
next thing I saw was my iPhone shutting down and restarting with that nasty install loader!

No warning, no "make sure you have a backup handy" no NOTHING

And whaddya guess? RIGHT! it failed on me (not enough disc space I assume)
Phone went into recovery mode and is now unrecoverable!
couldn't kick it out of recovery mode with any of my tools (and I have a bunch at my disposal)
Tried everything except for desoldering the NAND chips basically.

So I called Apple Support (30 bucks a call... since I don't have apple care)
And...
"your phone reported to be on 6.1.3 sir, is that correct?"
"uhm, maybe the wrong phone, that's the 3GS I updated yesterday.. this 4S was on ios5...and the update I guess was a more recent one likely 9.1 or so if I'm not mistaking"
"Well sir, it says 4s with that serial number you gave me being 6.1.3"
"Okay, well then IDK it's in recovery mode and all it asks is to recover deleting all my data 50GB ...and I was in the process of backing that up soooo....."
Long story short, he was feeling for me, but couldn't help, no way of saving or restoring that data on my phone.. a reinstall will ALWAYS WIPE the phone!
(No it doesn't actually.. but the forensic tool to recover the data has a midsized four figure prcetag... NOT at my disposal of course :()
So after a lot of :censored: stuff I thought.. well then....it's gone, recover the phone and live with it.
(what else was left, right?)

NOPE.. I can't, tried on four different computers by now, from old iTunes 10.6 to iTunes 12 from WinXP to Win7... either the phone cannot be recovered (iTunes 10 and 11 versions) or it's not even recognized by iTunes (any iTunes 12!)

So.. a formerly 1k phone now nothing but a dang paperweight....

I HATE UPDATES This cost me more than a new phone I need to buy... 50GB of data at least half that was important...

F* you apple for the worst update routines ever (and why the heck am I not allowed to keep my current version on the phone anyways.)

Sorry... I just cut and paste, Rather than press quote and delete the stuff that was not relevant to my comment.
Normally it would be poor forum ettiquette but this is a Poboy thread and there is no ettiquette.:lolgoku:

One reason I don't like apple products (apart from the obvious "it's compatible with NOTHING") is they're inaccesible; every pic I post is taken on my android phone, then uploaded via my PC; you can't do that with an iPhone...

What do you mean? Most all of my pics are from my wifes iphone, and I move them to my PC or Laptop and upload to this forum. ??
Disclaimer: I do not know crap about computers and I do not even own a smart phone. We take the pics then plug the phone into the PC with the USB and copy the file from the phone to the PC.

Well Tony, that's not true at all.. all photos I've posted are taken with my iPhone, uploaded to my computer (wirelessly, since one reason I like apple products is, there's an app for everything ;) ) and then put online here.
But true.. compatibility is ZERO ;)

well, I loved the mac pros (past tense...)
and I loved my iPhone (I still would, but it's dead :(),
it was much more reliable and functional than any Samsung I ever played with.
And frankly compatibility isn't much worse (you need to force root the samsung in order to have full control, as much as you need to jailbreak the iPhone [btw I didn't since I had no need to do that]).
You can't push just any data off any of the phones to another which is not the same brand.

I liked the appstore much better than the playstore, and that's basically it.
(mind you that choice was made 6 years ago!)

Just as with graphic cards such choice is close to religion ... I'd never touch ATI cards and some will never come close a GeForce.

Mostly prejudice or false premises..
But just like Linux vs windows or OS, you (we all) made the wrong choice.
Or are you running Linux?
I thought so.

We made a choice based on what seems to be comfortable and what enables us to use the apps (Software) we wanted.

The core of both phones is unix (android as well as ios)
one slightly modified and accessible like your common county prison,
the other heavily modified and accessible like fort knox.

And just to be clear, my sister's samsung force updated four times last year,
rendering her samsung gear watch useless everytime; up to a point where she ended up paying for that 'smartwatch' and it now is worthless to her (can't do what she wanted it to do anymore... don't ask.. some whatsapp stuff I didn't cared much about)
So yeah.. same shirt basically.

I'd still buy an iPhone (mainly because I spend ~300 bucks for ios software I intend to reuse instead of paying again for their android counterparts)

And again, there is not an App on any of the stores that's not on the other
(maybe by a different company or name.. but does the same stuff)
only difference -again- sometimes the ios version needs a jailbreak (i.e. it's on cydia not the appstore) when the android version is still working without root.
Then again.. there's antivirus for android (for a reason) but none for ios ...(same reason ;))

Anywhoo, that more recent (i.e. ~8 years) update shennigans on f* everything is driving me nuts.
Like Lemmings all the sheep update everything and do nothing but loose control...
and be happy about it.. dumbing the masses down.. good work!

And THAT is the cause of 99% of all computer troubles (including phones, tablets and the like)
Updates are made for ONE reason:
it ages your hardware faster; up to a point where you have to rebuy a new device.
This very computer I'm typing with was set up in 12/2001 (reinstalled in 2004 the last time)
and is running happily at almost the speed it had back then.
mainly because I never updated anything apart from my antivirus and a handfull of selected winxp hotfixes.

"New" software slows it down (requires more ram, more cpu..more everything),
and yes.. I have a newer one that's much better than this (drawing 3 times the power ;))
Still this one works like a charm, so it's in use until it's taken by the great computer gods into the peaceful heaven it deserves.

Apple products I think are just made to "die" so you have to buy a new one. My dads 4s just randomly died one day, never to resurect again according to apple. And his 2nd gen iPads' death is in the near future. It takes 5 minuites just to open up safari...

So I ordered some pulley's today. THINK what im gonna do, is remove the blade from this push mower I have [6HP], sit it up on bricks. and replace one of the drive tires with a pulley, and attach another pulley to the inside of the old electric motor arbor. and basically run my tablesaw like that. Seems pretty easy.. only thing I'm gonna need to do is either find a really long belt for said pulleys. or lift the lawn mower like 3 feet off the ground, most likely gonna end up lifting the lawn mower..

I knew I'd figure out how to gas power this thing sooner or later. sure beat paying a sparky a kidney to install and wire a 220v. just couldn't get one around here to give me a price I was looking for. the lowest I got was $800!!

Plus a gas powered tablesaw... nothing is cooler then that.

Wow, is your breaker box full or something? 220 is easy to hook up!

nope. just requires the line to be run up into the attic, and down an outer cement block wall.

its cause MUH CODE and it being an "outdoor" outlet. or something or another.

My biggest rant with apple products (well most apple users actually) is that there seems to be this idea going around that "apple can't get viruses, etc".

I want to physically face palm the person saying it every time I hear it.

My wife's aunt said it the other day. I tried to explain to her that yes they can, and yes they do, and the reasoning behind that myth, but she was having none of it. She kept repeating "well I have a friend that works at an apple store as one of their genius techs, and he says that it's impossible for Apple products to get a virus"

I just...wanted to...strangle her...

Now I've only played around with iphones, and didn't really like then personally. I've also played with windows phones, owned one for a few months...no thanks. I now own an android, s5. While I do love the s5, I haven't liked other androids for various reasons.

The one thing I don't like is my carrier, at&t. They force updates, and it sucks. I've done everything to fight it, and always it updates. It's supposed to only update on wifi, so I had the phone charging, wifi off. Wake up the next morning to an updated phone...on my data...pushed me over my limit. I was a bit fuming ya.

With the forced updates I can't root my phone either like I wanted when I originally got it. I bought it when it was still rootable, then when I got home it went into update mode, boom before I even got a chance it was like "hahaha, nope screw you!"

Not a happy camper. I'll definitely be switching carriers after my contracts up.

Better then sprint. the only thing they ever did right was the walkitalki kinda phones, Nextel I think is how its spelled. That service was great actually. worked so cleanly and best of all, the phones that offered the service were more tough in build quality.

Besides that I don't get service inside my house worth of squat if I'm not on wifi.

Besides phones... I currently have an LG G3 or what ever. nothing to phone home about.. [pun intended] I truly miss my old HTC and regret going to LG.. BUT its a phone, it works somewhat.

hehe..
Well Gordon, she's "partly" correct.

Technically no -non jailbroken- ios device is capable of hosting a virus!
(it simply cannot, since it's too strangled down)
So viruses and worms are not an issue on an ios phone..
Other malware still is (fishing is quite common on ios devices..., many apps do actually "need" GPS and Contact access for no other reason than to report those back to the company coding the app...)
Malware indeed.. technically no virus.
Also: worst case scenario with "device affecting malware" on such ios device is.. it won't run and crash the browser, app.. maybe even the springboard...
Restart the device, remove app/website in question and you're good, since NOTHING can mess with the actual operating system (not even you as the owner!)

So for that matter, your aunt is totally correct!

There are a few worms and viruses around for Macintosh computers as well as for Linux;
but the simple truth is.. 99% of all viruses target windows computers;
so while not immune, they're less likely to be vulnerable (and if set up correctly... even then viruses cannot harm much of the operating system... they can replicate and spread though)

I now have my sis's old S4 mini and I already hate it (she loves it since her new S5 mini is now the fourth device she got in replacement of the broken previous one... they shut down as soon as she get's a call for some reason *shrugs* some bug.. IDK)
Don't get me wrong.. it does what it supposed to do, and it does that reasonably well...
but that plastic shell, the butons in all the wrong places... it's just not my phone!

I'll be getting an iPhone as soon as my monetary units are back in stock ;)

And as much as I love the new design of the apple pro (frankly I looved the Mac pros even more, not for cosmetic reasons though ;))
it's crap... expensive as ****, and while itself is beautifully tiny... everything has to stand right next to it, so you'll clutter your desk in peripherals *yuck!*

Anyways, what I wanted to say initially:
switching carriers will not help much;
my sister was forced update on her Samsungs too.. by SAMSUNG!
nag screen that could only be closed by agreeing to install the new shotware (since that's where it starts... next call and that phone will shut down again ;))

Oh.. interesting.. it's no longer rootable? just like newer ioses are no longer jailbreakable?
Hmmm... where's the point then?

Someone should sue apple and samsung for this ugly shirt already.
Downgrades, and rooting on things that belong to me are up to noone but me!
(I'll happily void my warranty if that's their lame excuse)
But force updating anyone is malware!

And they should bleed for that.
