Now.. you can tell me if I'm wrong or not. I did some research into snakes/lizards/spiders as pets when I was in highschool. but aren't you suppose to not associate the top of the cage opening, with feeding? that you're suppose to take them out, and put them into another cage, and feed them from that cage, and when they where done, to move them back over? I had a family friend who told me that about snakes. [also aquariums aren't for snakes... he was avid about that one.]
Well...there are two schools of thought on whether to feed in a separate cage or not. Those that endorse a separate cage say that it keeps them from associating any feeding or strike responses with the cage...
I started out doing that and only fed live mice to her...
The people that think that you should feed in the cage you house them in make the argument that handling the snake is stressful and it could even cause the snake to regurgitate...As you can see....handling Oscar doesn't stress her out much....I tied her in knots just a short time after she fed....The other argument that they make is that after feeding the snake is going to be in feeding mode and the likelihood of getting bitten when trying to take the snake out is greater than feeding in their normal vivarium ...
I noticed that somewhat in Oscar when taking her out of the feeding cage...I had to use a back scratcher or the lid as a shield when first grabbing her and she often rattled when I first grabbed her...
I now feed frozen mice...(thawed of course) ...and it's as much a matter of convenience for me as anything..(insert laziness here).....There have been times when she didn't eat in her home....but when I put her in the feeding cage, she did.....
A little while back...I dropped a mouse in her cage....and she caught it mid air....I really wasn't paying attention to her last night....I was grabbing mice and throwing them in and was looking at the mice I was going to grab next...the hand she bit was holding the lid up....
And BTW, it's not very painful at all....despite what it looks like....
