Well, there's your problem...

Working on my lathe yesterday & the motor starts blowing smoke... wait, what? Electric motors aren't supposed to blow any smoke!

My first thought was the drive belt; remove the belt, still lots of smoke so I set about removing the motor. By the time I had it removed & checked the terminal block, it was time to pack up for the night so, I called my buddy Pete (electrical engineer) & arranged for him to come around today...

First thing he did (which I didn't get to last night) was check the capacitors; first one (starter cap) checked out fine but, as soon as he unscrewer the cover for the second one (run cap), we sort of knew what the problem was...

I still have no idea how it was still running...

Starting today I have 11 site surveys in 3 states.. totaling 1500 miles. Sometimes I really enjoy network security consulting and other times I wonder why I do this.

Do I take the Jetta and make money with mileage or the Tahoe and be safe in the blizzards aftermath.. uggg.. ;)

Lots of windshield time and MPR (Minnesota Public Radio) lays in my future.

Glad mileage pay is where its at and a gallon of gas is cheaper than its been in awhile.

Different topic...

While the temperature has dropped another degree since my last post, what's got me going now is all the ads on the evening news. Honestly, I thought the political ads were annoying. The thing is, what's replaced them is of even lower social value. The only ads that have been funny are Arby's, and they get old fast.

It just seems like they're all just another sign of the approaching apocalypse....

Here, right now, it's 19°C (66°F) with forecast max of 23 (73°F); the forecast for Friday is mid 30's (high 90's) & 40 (104) in the western suburbs (where I have to be)...

PBS....is not government funded in any way....strictly members and some corporations.....had/ has some great programming....but I don't get it for some reason.....

All depends on your tastes. Me, I've been known to binge on Antiques roadshow now and then, but my perennial favorites are Nature and NOVA. Mystery can still be fun, same with Dr Who, it just seems that when I get into a groove, they get into pledge breaks, and then the schedule changes..... And I don't watch enough TV to usually bother to track them back down, schedule wise. Can make things interesting when I run across them again though....

News flash:....It's cold!!!!! At least where I am.....

Now....for a large part of America....this is true....however....in Texas....we go from 80° f to 32° in 2 days...and that makes it a leetly bit rougher....but....the good Lord...in his all-knowing ways...knew enough to put Texans in Texas....'coz we're tough enough to take it!!!!!

And he put Aussies in Australia because he knew they were stupid enough not to notice how bad they had it.....or they would move to S. Africa to escape the heat.....:lolgoku:

So, are you implying that you're now actively looking forward to getting banned just as it gets to cold out to comfortably work outside? Even after thirty years of looking at the "WTF!?!?!" that logic that thought process doesn't add.

Or is this your ADD acting up again? :ack2: :stir:

Hey, I wasn't complaining, merely stating that we can (& do) have 20°C temp variations from one day to the next... in spring...

Oh & the good lord didn't put us here, that claim to fame goes to King George III... & I recently discovered that, prior to the American Revolutionary War, British convicts were sent to America to be settled mainly in Maryland & Georgia...
