Fishing up on Crane Lake, up in the boundary waters of Minnesota and Canada, we had hit some rocks without realizing it. It was myself, my dad and my cousin in a 1974 16.5'. the boat being made out of aluminum sheets held to the frame with rivets, had popped a few rivets out when we hit rocks, started taking on water. Now the holes where the rivets hold the boat together are 1/8" diameter, lost 4-6 rivets. Now I don't know who, but someone forgot to put in extra gas and oil (being a 70s era 70hp Evinrude its a 2 stroker). So probably about 20 minutes after we hit rocks and started taking on water, the water finally came through the new 3/4" marine grade plywood.
My dad go the boat started and I take a 5 gallon bucket and started bailing. Well when my dad got the boat up to plane, the water came in a bit quicker, so we had to limp to an island (unknown to us was on the Canadian side), and landed there to at least see the damage and to get more water out. Now that is when my cousin noticed we nearly out of fuel. We looked at the map and figured we were about 10 miles away from the docks we had launched from. We pushed the boat back into the water and used the trolling motor for a bit. We probably put about 400 yards when the battery gave out and died. So we flagged another Fisher down and got gas from him and he told us the island we were on was on the Canadian boarder, by this point we were on the US side so who cares? Well eventually we got back to shore and got the boat unto the trailer and ran into town for rivets.
Was a fun day and even though I got skunked on that lake, still enjoyed it.
