It will go slower, and you wont destroy the clutch, but acceleration will improve dramatically. Acceleration is WAY more fun than top speed IMO.

Wow! Nice job! At this point you've got a couple of options....
You can run the kart with your present motor (lots of 50cc karts out there) until you get the $$ for the Clone and clutch (#35 chain). I'd make sure the air shroud is back on the motor, as it's work will be cut out for it.
Or, go for a Clone and clutch set-up and keep that rear sprocket.
Either way, you're Golden.

Haha nice, but a gti seat may be a bit big and heavy, and with such a small engine mite not be the best idea. Have you looked into craigslist for an older dirtbike engine? i bought a suzuki dr 100 dirtbike for 50 bucks from a friend than ran fine, and thats on my cart right now, but i've seen some cheap bikes or quads on craigslist that would make awsome cart engines.
Pulled taut enough to where there is no slop, but loose enough that it doesn’t bind when you spin the axel. That’s how I always set them up.

No its the right way, look at the pull start and you'll see.
Thats what makes me think its backwards... If the recoil handle was twards the front then it would spin the engine in the right direction for the chain to push the Kart foward... but hey, I have been wrong before one more won't kill me, lol
Oh wait... Does it have a gear drive built into the motor that in turn reverses the output rotation? them pocket bikes are weird, lol

Haha your right, i didnt see that, i thought i saw the recoil facing forwards.
I'm concerned about the steering, First I don't think you want the wheels to turn as far as they do, if they got turned that far they would probably not come back to center by themselves.
Normally the steering wheel will come back to center position
by itself.

Could be a number of things, but the first things to look for (most common) are:
1. Sprocket Alignment -
Motor output sprocket to axel sprocket, check with a strait edge ruler of some sort.
2. Chain Tension -
Put the ruler back against both sprockets and push down on the chain, should be like 7/16" deflection
3. Wobbly Bits -
Check and see if the axel is slopping about when you give it gas, just put some blocks under it.
If its not one of those it might be the fact that your motor is pulling the chain from the underside of the sprocket instead of over the top and gravity isn’t doing you any favors... like below pics
