Help with steering gear

Hold up... This might help, Idk look into this 90 vs 45 degree thing. Can you show me a picture of the differences?

I ask because I also have that same rack in the same kart. When I first started "fixing up" our kart, I THOUGHT I needed a new rack. Without thinking twice, I ordered a "replacement" from GPS (which I denounce BTW, horrible store if you have any problems with their products). I ended up not needing it and selling it on Ebay but before I did, I gave it a quick look over, although through the plastic.

Thinking back, it looked like an exact replacement.

-But dont let this 'convince' you because I think ive been wrong once before. Almost positive it was the same tho.
I haven't found one yet with the same body length as the original. Getting past that, visibly, the 90 vs 45 is just the angle at which the steering shaft/u-joint connects to the body of the steering gear. See pictures below.

Internally, though, it also means the gears inside meet up at 90 instead of 45. I don't know whether that affects steering radius by affecting the distance the shaft in the steering gear extends out from either side of the steering-gear body.

Hopefully you and Edwin and others can flesh out a replacement steering rack that works and needs as little DIY fabrication as possible, and then buy a few for the future. It will help current and future Talon/Hammerhead/Chinese buggy owners. Hope to see a complete problem + solution thread, gentlemen.

I wonder if direct or traditional go-kart steering is feasible on these karts? Pittman arm and tie rods and maybe the whole assembly supported by ball bearings on the steering column and spindles for ease..... It might still separate the men from the boys trying to turn the kart.

A crow bar can be used to separate the men from the boys too Hellion! :roflol:

Getting stuff ready to take to landfill and then got to thinking maybe someone wants this . . . Thing? It has pedals now but has a mount where a motor once sat. I'm in Michigan, if anyone wants it for parts, let me know.

Are you nuckin futs? You have a great start to a kart there. A few pieces of tubing and some plate and you’re golden. Are those the rare and valuable Rupp turbine wheels on the front of it?

Cut him some slack, he's new here. Sulak, in case you were wondering DIY means Do It Yourself. 😁

Denny is right for once 😂, that's a great platform to make a kart from. I was going to say ditch the high wheels and lower it to kart height, but it might be neat to keep the high wheels and see how it will do on rutted mud trails. What was it originally?

Lol, I DIY everything I can. Problem is always time. Big maple (34" diameter) fell on my pole barn, and I've been working on rebuilding. Really don't have time right now to play with this. Don't know what it was originally, my kids just used it as a pedal cart. Found this site when trying to fix and sell their old go kart but ended up keeping it for now because they're still having fun with it. Bought a pair of used jet skis on CL in the spring to take up north and ended up putting a couple weeks into them (new wear rings, carbon seals, batteries, etc). Got them running great, had a blast with them. Sold em and now the cart needs new steering. It's always something.

Fun stuff, looks good! I have so many of those little USB controllers. The REAL fun begins when you want to use more than one on the same device.. Try using 6 LOL.

How do you find the latency on that specific board? Any noticeable input delay?

No, but those buttons are just for menu navigation, so I'm not sure how that board would perform for gaming. When I was testing it and assigning inputs, I was just using "notepad," and there was no delay that I could make out. The lightguns are the in-game controllers.

Man! I'm about an hour away from you. Wish I had some time to come and take it off your hand!
