I don't have a hex head large enough to remove the fill plug on the body on the steering gear (haven't measured it, but looks about 3/4"). Do these things come prefilled, or do I need to add hydraulic fluid?

It wouldn't hurt to look and make sure. Do you have a crescent/adjustable wrench? That would certainly add to the discussion. I suspect they come dry.

Not trying to be a smart *** here. Really. But if you've got $130 to spend on a new rack and pinion set up, surely you should have a few bucks left over to invest in some tools. Most common wrench sets and socket sets top out at 7/8". A lot bigger than the 3/4" you estimate it to be. When you get into the larger sizes
1" and over most auto supply shops sell sockets individually. One time needed a
1&3/4" socket. It was 3/4" drive. Had to buy an adapter for my 1/2" drive ratchet,
but 5 minutes, and about $22 later, problem solved. You can never have " too many " tools. Buy what you need to open it up and be sure.

Crescent wrench? Pipe wrench? Channel locks?
All 3 of those should/could be big enough.
I think that cap is rubber. -AND its not a hex head. Mine IS a hex head but its also rubber.

There is a rubber cap covering the plug. The plug is definitely metal on mine, not plastic. But even if plastic, still need a large Allen wrench to get it out.

I have more sockets than I know what to do with, all the way up to 3/4 drive. This is a plug, not a bolt, so a socket or wrench is not the answer. Need a hex wrench (Allen wrench), and my largest is 1/2 inch.

I was just asking if anyone knows whether they ship filled to save myself 2 hours to drive out to a harbor freight and back to buy an Allen wrench that I will use one time.

No one around you that might have the right size you could borrow? Someone around you has one, just have to find out who.
