That's a first I've ever heard of rods being bent pushing a kart backwards. I mean people do it a lot when it gets stuck or they need to turn it around. We are missing something here.

I was manually rotating the engine crank backwards. I meant to rotate it forward but wasn't paying enough attention and got the direction wrong. If that wasn't the cause of the bent push rods, I'm sure there was plenty of other dumb stuff I was doing that explains it.

Something had to interfere. Did you open the case, or removed the head before?

Possibly mis-alighned the cam causing piston to valve interference, or rocker not installed right, maybe the lifter tappet wasn't replaced properly.

Were you using a power tool to roll the engine over or just a hand ratchet? I would assume with a hand ratchet, you would have been able to feel it bind before major damage happened.

I was using a drill so that could do it. I have had the side cover and valve cover off previously but it's ran fine since then.

A good drill is like 1500-2000 rpm's (I think). The engine can rotate twice that fast, smoothly.

IDK what happened but It's still not running. replaced the pushrods, tried starting, nothing, starter fluid gave nothing. hand rotating it showed there was compression, spark plug was confirmed to be working popped off the valve cover and the rods had fallen out of their spots so I put them back and rough adjusted the lash. Tried starting it again got one fire then nothing. valve cover off again but the rods were in place still so I called it a night. next thing I'll do probably is drain the oil, triple check the cams, followers and compression release deal on the camshaft, make sure the rods aren't bent again and adjust the lash correctly. I'll need to find thinner feeler gauges though, the smallest one in any of the sets we have is 0.006" which is annoying af.

Maybe I'm not understanding something but why would you have to turn the engine over at all to align the chain? The clutch should spin freely on the engine unless it's engaged by the engine spinning.

You're right. I must have been doing something else. I honestly don't remember

PLEASE take video when you finally drive this thing. I expect everything is going to go wrong with this build. Be sure to have a fire extinguisher readily available :). and the engine location??? if front engine make it front engine. or make it rear engine. but never....except for motorcycles and beer crate karts....never put an engine between your legs! or next to your legs.

Maybe something like this is also ok. maybe.

maxresdefault.jpg

First premonition: You will probably burn your legs during the first ride. Pick up some leather chaps for protection?

firekart.jpg

Second Premonition: The HF tires will explode during first hour of driving kart. As you can see in my 30 minutes of driving with HF Tires.

A kart racing fire suit might be a good start instead of leather chaps. Either way you're sweating the jewels like you're in the center of Hades itself.

I really appreciate all the confidence guys :p

Gonna try and fix the engine again tonight. Something I noticed is that when I put the new push rods in, I had to adjust the screw on the exhaust side rocker arm almost all the way in like something else had shrunk/bent. Maybe that's a symptom of some common problem you all would recognize.

Oh, and I dumped the HF wheels a while ago. Currently using Flat free solids in the back and sawtooth turf savers in the front

I don't know what you did to that engine, maybe it was FUBAR when you got it.

Call it a learning lesson and go buy one of Joe's rota-derps. I hear they are sure fire!

I wanna see you succeed but this engine thing has us all facepalming.

I would agree, but I wanna know what the flip is wrong with this thing..

Harbor Freight was just selling the 212s for $93 bucks during their tent sale. Just buy another and use the dead one for spare parts.

Thats pretty much the plan. I didn't get a chance to work on a fix this weekend, I got sidetracked making a bar bot.

so I found one of the problems. the cap that keeps the valve spring from popping out from under the valve was missing on the exhaust side.

(pictured with intake cap switched over to keep spring in place after I fixed it That explains why the exhaust lash screw had to be pushed almost all the way in to get contact last time. I couldn't find the old cap and couldn't hear it rattling in the cylinder so I'm assuming it was expelled and is gone. I turned up a new one on the lathe from some threaded rod steel (somewhat harder than mild, still not great. Will check after a few minutes of running) and set both lashes to 0.003" using and actual feeler gauge. The compression release mechanism was also quite worn, possibly from turning the engine in reverse.

I tried pull starting the motor and although it sounded correct this time, it was not successful. I'll check the rocker arms, spark etc. and try drill starting or using starter fluid again tonight. If nothing else I'm learning tons about small engines.

It sounds like you dropped your lash cap in your motor and ran it??? The compression release could not wear like that naturally. Some foreign object was inside your motor. You probably shouldn't work on a motor if you don't really know what your doing. Do some reading on here to get some basic knowledge about your motor before ripping into it. That little cap does not hold your valve in.
