Added the hub, plate, and pedal. I don't mind spending a little more if I can get it all at the same place. If this is all I need besides a seat and belt then I can pretty much have a complete build for $400-450 including frame purchase. Now just gotta source someone to key my axle. Why does the hub show it being keyed out, vs in like the braking system? Do I need to actually have metal added instead of a groove cut?

No there is something called "keystock" it is just little square metal. Half goes in the axle half goes in the hub.
I can totally see the point to a one stop shop. Also in that case wait till Tuesday and call Go Power Sports. They are super cool guys. They will help you with your questions and make sure you get everything you need and that all the parts fit together. Like the Sprocket is the correct one for the sprocket carrier and stuff like that. They are great, and when you call back later to get a part you forgot they will remember you.
Great customer service. They are actually a member here on the forum!

Well don't spend $200 on that engine clutch and chain.

the engine is $99
the clutch is $20
The chain is $10

It is like flushing a $50 bill down the toilet and I won't stand for it. LOL

Wanna know how many fake smiles it takes me to make $50?

I can drive to GoPowersports in about 20 minutes and they're a great bunch of guys. But, I opted for having the clutch I bought from them shipped.

A large order...I would drive there.

But...I wouldn't buy an engine from them unless they were modding it for me. But, HF is only a 15 minute drive.

At least you'll get free shipping though...and 10% off.

Ya I figured I'd make it up on the back end with the free shipping and 10% off. Plus I know I'll be getting the correct things and with me not knowing exactly what I need that is worth it to me.

So I assume I need to go ahead and order a Key stock as well? I still need to find a place that will cut a keyway in my axle unless I can do it myself with a dremel perhaps?

I'm afraid they are going to tell you you need an axle. If you're careful...you might be able to DIY...or...as mentioned, find a machinist.

It could prove to be a stumbling block tho, personally I'd DIY...but I'm very good with those tools.

Key stock is just that... a piece of key material the size it needs to fit the KEYWAY...... except it usually sold in 12" lengths..... You cut off what you need......

And unless I missed something(which I might have) why not just buy a length of keyed shaft(as it is known, it has the keyway already cut, you just cut off the length you need) good to go????...

That's a nice steering wheel on your kart. I knew it was a Chevy product when I saw it but didn't know it was from a Corvair. Looks mint--definitely take extra care with it, take it off and sell it for mega bucks!

Good thread here, with massive development and quick moves. I love it when a plan comes together.

I'm pretty sure I can cut my own keyway for a keylock, like I said I'm pretty good with tools. If I do mess it up then I need to buy an axle anyways...so I'm not really out anything right?

I want to get a smaller steering wheel. Would like to save the steering shaft tho. Is that possible? Wondering if I can just use a steering wheel puller pull the wheel and mount a smaller one.

Is a steering wheel for a Corvair really worth much?

Does the keylock need to be secured in some way or does it just slide in the key and held into place when the hub is installed?

The key is held by the hub and within the keyway. the hub typically has a setscrew to secure it.
This however isnt a very good way to ensure it will remain locked down. I am a forum reminderer to keep you key locked down by any means necessary(except welding, that just stupid) As I have had a few instances of throwing key at speed and as of recently had a problem of stopping......

Tighten the setscrew down and use shaft collars on both sides of the hub. One could also use a pipe clamp to tighten down the key in absence of collars, just make it a bit longer to have a good foot hold for the clamp.

OH and by the way.....

This is his live axle....I can go to a hardware store or lawnmower shop and buy short keys...GP ought to have them as well.

So I just realised I do not have a live axle. When on the brake only my rear left Tire locks up, my rear right is not affected.

Technically, it's still a live axle...because it spins. It just has a free wheel. Check that wheel for bearings or just a missing key.

OK, thanks

When mounting engine should I try to keep it centered with the sprocket to the end of side of the axle or slide the motor to 1 side and center the sprocket on the axle? Common sense says to center engine bc of better balanced weight but not sure if sprocket location matters

When you get your sprocket and hub on the axle in a location that they do not interfere with your existing brake set up. That will tell you where exactly to locate the engine.
I prefer center, but I have 1 kart that came 6" to the right. It does not seem to effect handling or anything.

You can pretty much put it wherever you want..as long as the clutch on the engine faces toward the brake.

Sorry for my ignorance but why would it need to face the brake? Or do u mean it just needs to point towards the drivers side so that the motor turns the axle in the forward position?

One of our members here Grant. "Kartfab" has a kart building website.
Kartfab. com and his Youtube page. He has great how to videos that will explain how all of these parts fit together.
I suggest checking it out. He also works with GoPowerSports, So the parts you see him using in the videos are the identical parts available at GPS.
