try turning the idle up a little..could be shut all the way off on accident. pull out the spark plug and spray a little thrust (starting fluid) in there.

hmm, yesterday there was a spark but today i dont see one. also yesterday i could get an occasional popping sound but today, nothing here is a video of the engine:

So you bought that engine without even seeing it run...? Hows the compression? are you getting fuel? You say theres no spark? did you check the kill wire, if its grounding out that could be your problem.
Also you best be gettin an exhaust/header for that thing before you run it much.

Did you try starting fluid? Clean the coil? Replace the sparkplug? Blow out the carb? Put oil in it?
Pretty sure it has compression, as when he pulls it, it comes off the ground some.
...Can you smell gas out the exhaust? Also, like Kap'n said, get a header or a muffler for that bad boy.

i replaced the sparkplug and it was sparking the other day. cleaned out the carb but did not look at the oil. i do smell gas.
i think the main problem might be the spark b/c i tried starting fluid with no success. the day that it did spark though the engine would occasionally making a popping sound as if it was gonna run after several pull.
about cleaning the coils, what do you mean by this. sorry i am not very good with engines.

Cleaning coil not necessary except for aesthetics.
Check gap between magneto and flywheel magnets. Should be .010".
If laminations are touching flywheel, or to wide of a gap exists...that would be one possible reason for intermittent or no spark problems.

Ok, now take your flywheel cover off. Should be about 3-4 bolts. Then you will see your coil on top of the flywheel. Remove it. Then look at the "posts" on the coil. They should be shiny. If they are not shiny, use sandpaper or emery cloth to make them shiny. Then look at your magnet on the flywheel, it should also be shiny.
Now when you put the coil back on. It is necessary to gap the coil. It is gapped at .006 or around there. I use a piece of emery cloth to gap with, but feeler gauges are cheap and used in a lot of engine processes.
Now, put the shield back on and try to get a spark. If you have no spark, it is possible you have points. Here is a way to tell.
No points coil.
Notice how it has an extra post to the side. If your coil doesn't have this post, it will have points.

i've had a few of these type engines not get spark because of rust on the magnet and coil's pickup. engine looks clean, i would try kill wire as previously suggested. carb in the pic is wot, would it not close? looks like you had your foot right on top of the spark plug. maybe you fractured the ceramic?

Eagle, no points im assuming, its an 89' so thats fairly new.
Definitely check the kill wire and plug before you go buying a new coil.

Thats not how you check for spark... Hold the plug against the head and turn it over, you should see a nice blue spark.
