I’m going to order the sprocket or a brand new converter kit. I would feel bad but this is a great hobby and I got into it to fix it up

Kinda contradictory there, maybe?

Fix it up.
Buy a $10 4.5" angle grinder from Hazard Fraught and polish (grind) that rust off. You will be surprised and gratified at what that simple appliance can do.

Plus taking it apart, cleaning it, and reassembling it makes you learn the TAV pretty much inside and out.
"If it ain't broke..."

EDIT: Forgot to add get a wire wheel for the grinder. A wire wheel spinning at 10,000 RPMs takes crusty rust off so well, but won't score or gouge the sheave surface like a grit wheel will.

Exactly...I also remember reading somewhere him writing it was a Comet converter. Why waste such a good part? Wouldn't that be tragic? I would go out of my way to save it! I had one stuck on the engine off the Beast. I bent the sheave taking it apart. I straightened it out on the vice best I could and it worked great even with a small bend...but it must be clean...just give it a chance! Clean it up and drive it bruh!

Work for IT and IT will work for YOU!

You guys are 100% right. I’m off to the store to grab my cleaning equipment (carb cleaner, metal bristle brush, bristle drill piece) I bought some bolts with me to match them at the store and get new washer and bolts

I just noticed I had a few older pics of my TC in my phone.

Notice how the belt rides in the driven pulley? It is sitting on the very outside diameter and on the driver it is down deep inside. The belt looks tight but it isn't. It's a special belt for a 7 inch driven.

Notice the chain. It's snug but it does have just a bit of lash in it. Don't have it too tight. My main axle sprocket really needs replacing.

And last but not least this is the abortion that was on the kart when I got it so you see if someone can make that contraption work you can fix yours...and if I can make that hunk of junk back right then why ain't you done already?

My TC is missing a sprocket and that gold bushing for the belt to sit on. Can you tell me which belt you have? I’m going to try that. And how did you move the axle to tighten the chain a little. It looks like we have a similar set up. And I tried to find the exhaust gasket but the exhaust and muffler needs to be replaced and the OEM is only 12 dollars

NO! NO! NO! I already told you! You move the engine and the torque converter to tighten the chain! You don't move the axle! I looked at your pics, tell me something... where are you missing a sprocket at? The engine pulley spins the big pulley and the big pulley is turning the the jackshaft. On the other end of the jackshaft is a small sprocket. That sprocket drives the chain down to your big sprocket on your axle. I'm at work right now but when I get home I will see about making a video for you. You are going to have to really loosen up all your mount bolts and shove that engine back.

Did you clean those converters? You can buy a brass sleeve for it. Also make sure someone didn't put a 20 series driven on there as well. It happens. The driven is the big one. A 20 series is symmetrical. If the sheeves are symmetrical it won't ever work right. That thing just don't look right to me.

Check out go power sports. You can get gaskets from them

If you lived closer I'd just go get you and your kart and we could work on it and fix it.

Trust me I wish I did live closer but maybe we can video chat. I only say I’m missing a sprocket judging by YouTube vids of people putting the TC on. I haven’t cleaned it yet, I’m at work right now. I’m sure I’m missing the brass bushing.

Judging by your pics my jack shaft is in the same metal tubing as yours

I'd bet money you aren't missing a sprocket. You only need 2. One on the axle and one on the jackshaft. If you are under the impression you need one behind your pulley you don't. You have a different setup. I'll show you.

Ok Will, I have 2 very basic and somewhat generic pics of torque converter applications to show you. You can bet there are other setups.

But for now, these 2 setups are what me and you are going to be focusing on right now to prevent confusion.

The very first picture is a 30 series TAV2 Chinese Copy of the Comet TC. This one is a modular unit that mounts entirely to your engine. This one has a sprocket directly behind the driven pulley between it and the shaft support plate. This is NOT the unit that came factory equipment on your kart.

IMG_20190628_152857457_HDR.jpg

For whatever reason I think you are believing you should have a sprocket in this location...the answer is NO!

Your kart should have a setup somewhat like the one pictured below. This is the second basic torque converter setup we are concerned with. The driver is bolted to the engine and the driven is on a jackshaft that is attached to the frame desperate from the engine. The jackshaft is supported by multiple bearings which normally makes for a stronger setup than the TAV2. It is just more heavy and bulky. The jackshaft is also very adaptable. The chain drive sprocket can be placed on either side be it behind the pulley like the TAV2 or all the way on the other side of the support housing like on our Murray Explorers.

I think yours differs that it has a dust guard in places.

The one big benefit to the sprocket being on the end is ease of maintenance.

So here is a picture of mine close up.

IMG_20190628_152729438_HDR.jpg

So there's no other sprockets. Just one.

Now I'm going to take a nap for a while then I'm going to find out what size nuts go on your exhaust manifold. I bet they are m6-1 or m7-1

Till then.

The second picture is my setup exactly. So I do t need a sprocket on the back of the drive pully.. great! I still need the bushing and a great clean and probably new springs for my TC

There ya go, proper knowledge is key man. I'm trying to help you out. We wanna get that Murray Explorer running around again terrorizing the neighborhood.

Now you need to make up a good name for it.

---------- Post added at 07:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:34 PM ----------

Don't forget, you wanna tighten that chain slide that engine back.

So I have taken my TC off, besides your TC being clean my back pully looks different from yours

The way your belt sits in the back pully is different from mine. I will take more pics of it when I get home. Can you please tell me what you think may be wrong.. kind of getting me worried but I’m sure you’ll know the next step to getting it right

Well, to be honest, I'm concerned that someone may have stuck a 20 series driven on there at some point...if so that would explain your belt problem. It's not a worry. It's an expense. You can't mix the 2 because the belt profiles are different for each one. If you do some research into identify the difference between the two of them you can tell real easy just with a quick look.

The way your belt sags into that pulley... I've seen it before...a 30 series belt in a 20 series driven.

Look at the driven, the big pulley in this pic, does the belt sags look familiar, what about the pulley

IMG_20190306_122141713_HDR.jpg

That's a 20 series... don't ask me why someone did that I don't know...

Can't go by the numbers. One side is flat and one side has an angle...looks like a 30 series...but it's rusty and nasty, and shouldn't be painted on the inside.
Clean it up.

This is a good thread. Thanks to all involved for their patience and diligence in helping to eradicate all these gremlins.

My cart is running (no brakes yet) great!! I think when the guy idled it down it lost some speed but it is running stable. First pull every time.

Well you want a low idle speed so when you let off the gas the Torq-A-Verter disengages and the kart slows to a stop. You also want the lowest possible idle RPM for safe starting so that when you're yanking on the pull starter and it fires up, it doesn't take off without you in it.

However, make sure you fine tune your throttle so there's no excess slack in the cable and when the pedal is at maximum depression, you also have the throttle butterfly *wide open* or as much as possible.
