Parshall stack, that's hilarious. Sounds like you had some cool gear man, think you'll ever get back into playin in a band again?

Since posting here last, my old bands have all pretty much fizzled out. I joined a new female fronted cover band called Doghouse Roses a few months back, besides rehearsals we've just played one gig at a big Christmas party so far.

I've also been playing with another blues/rock type project that's just finally landed a talented frontman after enduring a couple months of tedious auditions.

This week I swapped my old 77 fender Twin Reverb for a 1966 Ampeg B-18n bass combo. Its not all that loud but sounds like freakin hot buttered jesus.

Yeah, I had a Parshall, our drummer had a Pudwig! Part Pearl, part Ludwig. Cracked me up. Pudwig sounds like a toupee for your junk, if you know what I mean.

Every so often I pick up an axe and goof off for a bit, but I have forgotten so much in the 8 or so years since I left the band. I'm pretty much done, I have no time for it now. However, my 10 year old son and my 16 year old neice have started to show interest in playing, so I guess I'm not done completely!

I have been playing acoustic guitar for 5 years. I play pretty consistently, so I think I am good solid intermittent.

Stick with it man, have you thought about joining a band?

Yeah they'll need all the support you can give. I really tried to learn guitar as a kid but didn't have anyone to help out so I got frustrated and gave up. It'd be a lot more fun for them to learn and play along with you as a little family band.

That was basically my thinking. My sister-in-law bought my neice a really nice Jackson- I was actually jealous! My first guitar wouldn't hold a tune if you welded it on! At any rate, with the complex Floyd Rose setup, she doesn't understand how to mess with the tuning, good thing I was the guitar/bass tech in the band. Actually, I was annoyed when they did. Knowing that I was the family guitar guru, they didn't consult with me first. I had told them that when the time came to buy her first electric (she had an accoustic) they should get my help. I would have selected something simpler and cheaper to begin with. Probably a Yamaha, definitely WITHOUT a Floyd-style bridge. Now she gets frustrated with it, and I can certainly understand why. I owned several Yamahas over the years, and found them to be an excellent quality for the price.

Someone bought my son a little 3/4 scale accoustic last Christmas and he messes with that periodically. I have played on it to show him some stuff, but holy cow it's tough fingering full chords on something so small!

Bass is easy in most reggie tunes,

This is a well known keyboard reggie bass line, called sleng teng, used in loads of reggie tunes back in the 80s

I have, but there isn't anyone I know who likes to play country music. Plus, I don't think anyone would want me in a band anyway.

I played sax and harmonica in a blues band when I used to live in Kansas City. Now that I've moved to the country it's hard to find musicians, especially people who like the blues. Most folks around here listen to country music, unfortunately. I still build harmonica amps, but I'm getting tired of dealing with fickle musicians, so I'm ready to use up my parts stock and move on to something else.

My sons are interested in music now. I'm teaching one of them to play sax, and the other one is interested in keyboard and drums. Maybe we'll be able to start our own blues band. Then we'll have to convince the local barbecue restaurant that they need to have a blues band on Tuesday nights or something, so we can have a place to play a real show. I always noticed that playing in front of people in a band means a lot more than just fooling around by yourself.

Yeah your right. I dont have any trouble playing the notes, I just cant seem to get that kinda feel to my playing.

Yeah I hear ya and know Its tough enough to find a band I can get into even here in a big city.

My brother plays in an all-harmonica band here in Phoenix.

Its cool you build amps. I've collected a bunch of all-tube Bass and guitar amps over the years. I'm no amp tech but you might be interested in reading about a Cathode-lift mod I did to my Mesa/Boogie 400+ sometime.

Just sayin bout me playin an instrument. some of you know, i live on long island in NY and i am 15. I have been playing Guitar for about 6 years and am known as one of the best players/improvisers in my area for ages 12-20. i am currently in a band that plays shows all over long island and have been doing co headline shows. we are a completly original band with maybe a cover or two and play almost every kind of classic, rock, metal, reggae, etc. i might be able to get a vid or some pics up soon but my next show is on Feb 12.(gotta make some money to help fund the projects )

I just found a swing band on Craigslist, about an hour from here at the Lake of the Ozarks. They were advertising for some new members. I'm planning to catch their rehearsal in a week or two. May be able to get in and play sax. Sounds like they know what they're doing. The guy said they have 300 charts in their library, so they're playing the real thing, from sheet music. That will be pretty handy.

(For those under 20 who don't know what "swing" is, it's also called big band music, from the 1930s and 40s.)

I've been playing the guitar for around 2 years. Self taught everything i know and im pretty good if i do say so myself. Im not in any bands yet but just to get a perspective of what i play i did a cover of More Than Words by extreme for a talent show a couple of months ago, then played Sweet child of mine at another show, played stockholm syndrome by muse at another one, and at the last talent show i played my own remix of some metallica songs. it started it off as one, then went into the day that never comes, then into master of puppets. It sounded really good.

I get lots of opportunities to play b/c my local library has an open mic night on the first thursday or every month. At this point ive basically hit a road block in my playing though. I need to get lessons to get better. ANy of you guys have any secret speed techniques or any signature riffs that you wouldnt mind tabbing out and posting here so that some of us may try it??

You never know one of us may be faomus someday and use that same riff and youll be sitting at home sayying " Yeah josh you play that riff hell yeah man!!" and then some random dude looks at you and you tell him that you showed me how to play it. lol. I have an active imagination. hahahahaaaaaa

Take some lessons if you want, but I just think you've hit the point that your totally ready to join/form a band. If your like me, you'll end up learning more cool stuff from just jamming with a good drummer, bassist and vocalist than most any music teacher could ever help you learn...

Although if your mostly just interested in impressing everyone with your incredibly high-speed, shredding chops, then by all means take all the lessons you can. But that still wont teach you squat about playing in a band and making music along with others.

But I'm telling you, playing with a good band is the best music lessons I've ever found.
