the first instrument i played (baritone, a small tuba) was to get out of T.A.A.S. practice exams (8th grade year). did the best i could, and ended up being pretty good. did a fall concert at school. the guitar and violin, i got because i like the sounds. the violin mainly because of charlie daniel's 'devil went down to georgia' and classical solos.

started guitar when i was 12 i believe, my best friend was learning it and i was determined to try and get better than him so i did lol, he was better than me for 4 years and now he admits that i have more skill than he does! lol then this summer my one friend was sick and he needed someone to play bass for his band in a gig they had so i learned bass in about 30 seconds lol, after never touching a bass before i had people tell me that i was a great bass player, so i have been playing bass officially since then. and about the last 4 months, me and my band decided that we needed to have piano in or songs and have a slower more soft melow tone to our style. so yet again i decided to learn a instrument (thank you youtube and piano chord charts lol) and i have loved playing a piano ever since! thats basically my story

Yeah the bass seems (and probably is) easier on the surface, but the further you get into it you realise how much power you have to control the whole bands feel, groove and general vibe. I dig it, I've become a competent guitardist (
) over the years and I play my 6-strings to write and screw around but no longer have any desire to play guitar in a band setting.
I like the challenge of figuring out and doing doing whatever's necessary to make the guitars, keys and drums sound and work well against the vocal melody lines. At least in my bands, I think my bass parts are the glue that holds everything together.

i totally agree! if you dont have a bass in your band, its gunna sound like crap! you definitely need that low end filler and that bass grove to keep everyone on tempo! a band without a bass guitar is like a band without drums lol

I've always heard that the band plays off the drummer, and the drummer plays off the bassist.
There's me and My warlock.
I also have a Fender Squier (my first bass), a crappy Yamaha.
And my baby: Schecter Stilleto Elite-4
My crate half-stack makes them come alive.
I also play keyboard and drums.

I didnt expect this at all but it seems were starting to out-numbering the guitarists reporting in so far.
Do you other bassists find your usualy the most technically knowledgeable person (about amps, PA's, recording and stuff) in your bands like I always have?
My curent guitarist has been gigging for like 15 years and seems to be an intelligent guy and all, but it still seems like he has like a 50/50 chance at getting one of his pedals or something plugged in backwards that I have to end up figuring out for him... Plus after explaning to him serveral times, he still hasn't seemed to of grasped the concept that you should never interchange guitar cords and 1/4"-speaker cables.

I think most (but not all) guitarist I've seen sitting in on bass tended to be overly busy, showoff wankers instead of supporting the song like they should-a been.

Hey Suburban, I've never tried one of these out but lots of people seem to really dig-em. I think its a pretty cool concept and imagine its still takes a good bit of skill to master.
