    $200 Ody is Spokane Wa.

Here in the north east, they'd be asking $900 for that. Looks like it could use some bigger rear tires...with a 440, that's going to spin those all over the place.

    Widening Peerless 900 Transaxle

Thanks. I'm still a little on the fence about the whole rear-end design. My current thinking is to put the engine and tranny on a sub frame and make it into a giant swing-arm, but I've got a large-ish 15HP Tecumseh motor and I'm a little concerned about the weight. I have 2 rear shocks that...

    Widening Peerless 900 Transaxle

Don't think there's going to be room since that's where I"m planning to put my brake. There's only about 4-5" between the casing and the inside edge of the wheel. I was thinking about seeing if there's a spot inside the transaxle that I could machine out to install some bearings but the case...

    Widening Peerless 900 Transaxle

Thanks. No centrifugal clutch in the plans... just a pulley-tensioner like the mower originally used. I'm going to rig up a double pulley to put extra tension without having to deflect the belt as far.

    Front Brakes Only?

Thanks.... I think I'll put a single disc on the rear and see how it works. I have spare parts so I can always add a 2nd one later if I break something. I was fortunate enough to pick up a busted Peerless 920 that blew out a gear and cracked the case, so I've got spare axles and spider gears...

    Front Brakes Only?

Working on an off-road kart and I'm at the stage where I want to finalize my plans for adding brakes. I'm using the front a-arms and spindles from a Honda ATV and I have the brake discs, calipers, and master from that, so front brakes will be a breeze. The rear is a Peerless 900 Transaxle from...

    Widening Peerless 900 Transaxle

Yup... basically using the drivetrain from the mower with different pulleys for higher speed and "race-prepping" the transmission. Trying to decide on lubrication now... folks over at the mower racing forums seem split between using factory grease with some STP or Marvel Mystery Oil to thin it...

    Some basic questions.

A fairly loose fit for a chain is normal. Depends on the length of course, but you usually want to be able to deflect it 3/4-1" at the center. A little too loose is better than a little too tight.

    Widening Peerless 900 Transaxle

I have a spare transaxle and was thinking of widening mine by using the longer axle from the spare in place of the short one. Aside from the need to mount the transaxle offset a few inches to center everything, is there any reason anyone can think of why this wouldn't be a simple and effective...

want to build a go cart very cheap

In reference to the OP's original question about using wood for the frame. There's precedent for wooden frame high performance vehicles. Morgan has been building cars with ash frames for close to 100 years. They use an ash / aluminum sandwich. Probably not a DIY proposition and probably...

How do I remove Bearings from Trike Rear Housing and Wheels?

Always a pleasure to help out... I'm a complete noob when it comes to karts, but I've been fixing mechanical stuff (sometimes successfully) for almost 40 years. (Holy ****.. it makes me feed old to say that). Places like this are where karma works. I'm sure I'll be asking a ton of questions...

How do I remove Bearings from Trike Rear Housing and Wheels?

I've done a bunch of quads and never had any problems and they're ridden through mud and water constantly. The bearing holders are short, so I'm only working across 6", but it's still basically the same operation. Just take your time and go easy on them tapping gently around the bearings...

How do I remove Bearings from Trike Rear Housing and Wheels?

When installing the new bearings, it sometimes helps to put them in the freezer for an hour first. (Wrap them up in some paper towel and a ziplock bag). They'll usually shrink enough to slip right in with no hammering.

CL Find - 2 Stroke cart Binghampton NY

Found this when searching today. Looks like a pretty nice project for $200. I'm actually rather temped to go up and buy it myself, but I promised my son we'd build a kart together. http://binghamton.craigslist.org/mcy/2938904510.html

Picked up a Chinese Quad... New Project

We have a bunch of Japanese quads and dirt bikes and they all suffer from clogged up carbs on a regular basis... The passages in the jets are just really freaking small and the combination of dusty riding and gas sitting in them for weeks plugs them up quickly. The good news is that it takes 5...

We should design the worlds greatest go kart :D

My perspective as a noob would be that the real goldmine here would be to design the "best" kart on a small budget.. say $1000. A few different categories perhaps? Track racer Off-Road General backyard/dirt tracker

Things you need to build a go-kart

You can never have too many or too large a vise. I have 2 on my workbench (a 4" and a 5"). A 4" on a mobile stand and upstairs where my metalworking stuff is, I have a 4" and a 3" on the bench, and a 4" and a 3" on my mill. I also picked up a HUGE 150lb 6" Morgan that's been sitting in the...

    Rear suspension thoughts wanted

Thanks... My original thought was to mount the motor on the fixed section of the frame and just the tranny on the swing arm to reduce the unsprung weight, but I don't think I'll be able to keep the belt on the pulleys. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of cutting down the...

    Rear suspension thoughts wanted

I'm working through some ideas for an off-road kart. I've got a 12hp vertical shaft mower engine along with its Peerless 5 speed transaxle. I'm planning to use a friction clutch setup similar to what's on the mower now. Since I'm old and don't really want to have my brains bounced around...
