Check the wheel base, the shorter.....the quicker!

If the kart only quits when you push the brakes check the clutch for hang up. Basically if it is hanging up the rotation of the wheels will slow the engine as well, and die. I would check the diaphram in the carb if its a pulsa-jet type. a fouled plug can also be a culprit.

sprockets I looked at the picture to see what you were talking about, the sprocket in the rear has guide plates. Looks like multiple sprockets though doesnt it!

clutch I only use disk clutches, I have a tomar 2 disk clutch on the red kart and a Horstman 3 disc on the Jr sprint. Centrifical clutches get very hot and the drums warp, kinda egg shaped. The disk clutches can be adjusted for engagement at a determined RPM. Want pictures??

I built a sidecar for my sons bike once. I was fun but the problem I had was that the bike frame was a alloy of some type and the weld wouldnt hold for long. You are almost better off making the connections bolt on. As far as your idea goes, you sound like all of us at one time or another! good luck

axle Your axle size of 1 inch should hold up okay due to the bigger tires, what I mean is the tires will absorb the beating before the axle takes abuse. If it does end up bending go with a 1 1/2" tube steel axle next go around, there stronger....I dont know how to explain it but they are.
