a carb works on a butterfly "flap". The more open this is, the more air is sucked in, which sucks in more gas. it should be closed, or mostly closed when the throttle isn't pressed.
if it dies, the simplist problem could simply be the idle adjustment screw. On most engines, this is the screw that "props" the butterfly open to wherever you want the idle at.
On some newer engines, there may be a max throttle position screw, don't confuse the two.
