    My Hiatus

Don't feel too bad. I plan on taking it a second time over this summer. A 6 week course, 3 hr/night 4 days a week. :ack2::ack2::ack2:

    My Hiatus

My friend and I finally managed to figure it out. There's some tricky stuff happening to turn the charge into potential energy, which then relates the unknown charges by a constant and they can be elimnated from the equation leaving a number equal to a functiong which can be numerically solved...

    My Hiatus

So, here I am studying for an E&M exam and was wondering if anyone could help here... I can't seem to agree with my professor and I believe I am correct. I don't need to find the initial charge q(naught), just the time to reach half of its initial potential energy. There's one error in my...

TS: I know, right!? That's well over a full-size kart built, on average... FOR A RACK! (well, some racks are worth that ;)) Fowler: I believe those all add too much weight. Reducing weight is the #2 objective, behind being safe.

    Just learning sketchup

If these programs aren't yet complicated enough, imagine trying to use a 3D mouse to manipulate SolidWorks/Inventor/SU... (http://www.3dconnexion.com/products/spacemousepro.html) I got to play with one tonight and it's quite the adventure. Apparently you catch on after an hour or so, but I...

    My Hiatus

Went into the shop tonight to help out. I ended up blasting out some lug nuts on the lathe (yes, the beauty above). Also, we went to a new company for our steering rack this year, Miltera. Now, if price is nearly no object for your build and you like titanium, this is the rack for you (ours...

The Pittsburgh International Autoshow was this weekend and they gave our team a booth to promote ourselves as well as spend some time at the show. Today we got to play with an enormous simulator which was originally set up for a Ford Focus ST, but some team members became friends with him over...

Another bit of info here... We'll be using either 420 or 428 chain this year to cut weight. That's ~85HP being put through it. Based off spec, this was found to be the lightest, strong enough chain. I had previously greatly underestimated how much it can take.

Well, we've begun constructing the a-arms and here's what, IIRC, is a rear, upper a-arm. The ends were lathed to hold spherical bearings as rod ends at the hub are highly frowned upon for some reason. This is a very good site for articles...

    My Hiatus

Sorry I've been so, well, not here. From that blurry tag and some searching, it seems to be a 1942 (clearly) model 10" EE. As for the car, it's now off the table jigs and on to what we call "the spits" which is basically a chassis rotisserie. It makes it much easier to weld the underside of...

    My Hiatus

It's definitely much more computerized, but so is a majority of industry. It was all modeled in SolidWorks where stress and load tests were run. For the first time this year, we did outsource the tube work to a company to have all of the tubes machine cut and bent. As for the jigging, we bought...

    My Hiatus

It surely did! Everything has specific angles and dimensions in the SolidWorks model, so we had to make the aluminum jigs accurate to the thousandth, .001! (Before, I hadn't really used more than an "Eh, good enough, I'll fill that with the welder" style of approach.) HEY!! That...

    My Hiatus

Here are a few shots from the early stages of jigging and tacking. Some of these angles are baffling to me, especially in the rear. How they came up with the design is unknown to me. We sent out an order for the tube to have it cut, bent, and fish-mouthed by machine so that they all fit nicely.

    My Hiatus

I'll have some updates and photos tonight. We started jigging it this past week and tacking/welding portions together last night. We pulled an all nighter, leaving some time after sunrise this morning, but we made huge progress.

So, today, I applied my DIYGK knowledge to the car to correct two senior team members. We're trying to mod last year's car to incorporate anti-ackerman, where the outside tire takes a tighter circle than the inside tire. While trying to figure out how to do this since the computer wasn't...

I'm assuming you haven't been to Pittsburgh recently (last 15-ish years). :P It's so far from a steel town any longer. Technology is booming with Google offices and educational institutions all over. Between Carnegie Mellon's National Robotics Engineering Center and the University of...

As not to keep starting new threads, I think I'll just keep digging up this to document what all has been happening. I'm loving college and loving FSAE even more. We did some testing with Carnegie Mellon University (also in Pittsburgh, walking distance away) and got some crazy numbers from the...

So, I'm just going to keep digging up this thread until I finally settle in and have time for leisure things, like this. I'm moved into Pitt and talked to the Pitt Racing team today. They intend to start soon and I plan on being there as much as possible. Initially, the team, they said, is...

    Choosing a Welder

The Millermatic 135s I've used were all flawless. I have nothing but good remarks for them. Great 120v machines that can run either gas or fluxed. I will say this though, they're not idiot proof. When I learned to weld in school, my class was the only class learning and we were all...
