Update!!

Apart from fabbing up a brake bracket and some paint, the Drifter is finished!

I just screwed an air filter onto my air filter adapter (picture 1) but I plan to make a proper air filter adapter out of plastic soon.

It drives really well considering the ratio (4.8:1 on 14.5" tyres). I've only had it driving above 10mph in the field because of no brakes.

I'd say it does about 45-50 mph at 5000-5500rpm. Because it is running slightly rich, you get that pop-pop-pop when you let off the throttle and sometimes a little flame.

Overall, it's a great kart and my brother is now wanting one ;) :D

Thank you so much guys, without this site I wouldn't have been able to do this!

Matthew

Well I've been driving the kart around a lot and although the engine has lots of grunt (power), I'd like more so I've been doing some research into it and it seems I should upgrade cam, 18lb+ valve springs, aluminium flywheel and billet rod.

The current specs are: custom exhaust, custom air filter, 85 jet, GX140 Emulsion tube and governor removal.

I have a few questions though,

1) Do I need to upgrade to an aluminium flywheel and billet rod when adding 18lb valve springs considering this is a genuine Honda because a guy near me tunes these engines and puts them to 7000rpm with stock flywheels and rods. Is this advisable?

2) Is there anything else I should add to give her more grunt? I'd like about 8-10 hopefully.

I was also considering, decking the head, thinner gasket and maybe a 20-22mm ATV Carb?

I am thinking of changing the gearing from 4.8:1 to 5.4:1 or 6:1.

Give me your thoughts, whether they be good or bad, I'd like to hear them.

If you change the springs i would definitaly change the billet parts too.

As for the gearing....you will lose a bit of speed but gain torque. If you are happy as it is now i wouldn't change anything

All the air filter adapters are sold in the US, and the shipping is more than twice the price of the product, which means the cheaper option would be to make one.

Shipping is silly from the U.S. To Northern Ireland I can ship fairly reasonable to you. Anyone that may need something that you can only get here. It costs a lot for businesses to ship overseas but I can ship a good deal cheaper.

Right, I haven't done much to this go kart apart from driving it. I'm just wondering do any of you guys know what shade of red that genuine Honda gx160/200's come in?

I painted mine in Massey-Ferguson Red (off the shelf colour); it's not exact (it's a little darker) but it's close...

If you take the shroud to an auto paint shop, they should be able to match the colour exactly...

Thanks. The shroud is faded though, so the matched colour wouldn't be very accurate.
Been a while since I updated this with pics (over a month)

Pic 1: I ordered and received a new recoil (other one was breaking springs and missing a pawl).

Pic 2: Added a breather pipe.

Pic 3,4,5, & 6: Some shots of the kart outside.

I'm wondering about upgrading to a TC, but I am concered about having enough room (See Pic 7,8 & 9)

If you were to upgrade to a torque converter, i would consider a live axle too, that would make the kart more fun.

The axle runs inside that tube..... You just can't see it.....

Matthew, before buying all those goodies, I'd suggest changing the gear ratio to 5.4:1.... That's what I'm currently running, with a modded gx160 and 13" tires. Pretty good set up for the street. Fast on the top, and enough grunt on bottom so it's not slow taking off. I had it at 6:1, but wanted a little more speed. If I change it again, it will be to a 56 or 58 tooth........
Just so you know, it's not really the filter that holds the hp back. It's MOSTLY the filter box itself..... It slows down the intake charge and also restricts how much can go in. I forgot about what we talked about in the pm's. I'll get on it, ASAP......

You still haven't PM'd me. The reason I'm wanting to change to a TC is so that I can keep the 4.8:1 but have a little more take off speed.

I'm kind of tired of seeing the stock fuel tank on these engines, so I want to do something a little different.
Does anyone know of a cheap and easy way to mount a remote tank to a go kart? I'm thinking of getting a push mower tank and attaching it to my steering support and then running a pipe to the carb.

Thanks,
Matthew

You ca use anything as a tank. Just run a longer fule line to the new tank. As long as it is above the engine you are good to go.
