My drifter when I got it:

And my drifter now (It still needs paint):
IMG_0170 (2).jpg

My first frame off build. I did a live axle conversion, running a p212, and 4.8:1 gearing. I made the seat myself. I figure I spent about $750.

The Hothead

Took the Hothead from "Poor Thing" To "WILD THING"!

It still needs work, but it's gotten a lot of much-needed love.

And hey, it won the Build Off! :wai: :cheers2: :2guns:

nice jt, I have the 50 $ gokart it's by far my favorite. I have a honda gx 270 on it and it will burn tires like crazy, even faster than the hot head. but it's 'kinda insane and my friends don't like it as much as my other karts. it is very hard not to fall out though. and the chain keeps falling off, so I ordered a new sprocket today to replace the old one. it looked like a saw blade the teeth were so worn. the 50 $ gokart is alive and very dirty.

IDK, I once got the Hothead to peel out like mad, with the drive tire flat and the engine not running right! :auto:

And I still plan to put the stock size rear wheels on, which will be narrower and lower the gearing. That, combined with more engine mods soon, should make this thing pretty nuts!

The Hothead is also kind of insane, I won't let anyone else drive it as the engine is such a beast, and it torque steers. Plus of course the tires are all dry rotted. :p

Also, what's your kart's top speed? Mine's 38 MPH.

JT, I don't know my top speed but I estimate 50-60 mph. I really do not think it is safe to go that fast with no seat belt or sissy bars. also I don't have a place to test my top speed because I found out that it was illegl to drive on the road in front of my house.

Technically all karts are illegal on the road, but the cops hardly come to my neighborhood, plus the neighbors are chill! Plus I only drive on neighborhood streets.

50-60 MPH??? What mods have you done to that engine? And with what gearing??

I half way belive it's possible. app.kartcalc.net thinks my drifter would be capable of 54mph with a TC, governor removal, 11t tc sptocket, and a 38t 1" bore sprocket I found in a junk pile a few years ago (it's for 420). And that's letting it assume a stock 212 (other than the governor). Though my drifter was built a bit lighter than stock, and with 11" racing wheels.

JT , my kart has a 14t clutch and 60t driven I have 3.5-5" wheels I think. I am guessing 50-60 mph because the karts for professional rent to race do 50 with governor and I have no Governor. but I could not find the speed calculator. if someone Knows with post it's in that would be helpful and appreciate.

Ok, just because the rental karts go 50, that has NOTHING to do with your kart's top speed. They are extremely different!
It's not just down to governor or not, the karting world would be very boring if that were the case.

And the speed calculator says your top speed is around 43 MPH, with 12 inch tires, 14T clutch, 60T sprocket, with the engine turning 5200 RPM.

To find the speed calc, go to rhe DIYGK homepage, and scroll down the side bar. Hit the link that says "Speed Calculator".

Based on your info, and me adding 1000 rpm above average, I came up with the following:

Drive wheel- 5"
RPM- 4600
Rear axle- 60t
Centrifugal clutch- 14t
Final ratio- 4.286
Max speed- 15.966 m.p.h.

That's thru BMI karts calculator, only a little shy of 60 m.p.h.!
