I like the Rotax 277 because it has 26-28 hp in its stock form and it has a cooling fan on the flywheel instead of a belt driven axial fan that in time for what I am using my kart for would eat up the fan belt because of dirt ingestion in the cooling fan.Others will work of course but this engine has four intake transfer ports opposed to two in the old style snowmobile engines and it makes a lot more power than they ever could but there again I am talking about a single cylinder engine. This engine has a CDI ignition system and one can buy piston a full millimeter oversize so you can it can be re bored a few times before the cylinder is junk but the you can re sleeve the cylinder and start all over again if one had to.This engine has a head that can be cut down for squish band modifications and so forth so you can do some work on this engine and get something in return. But it is a piston ported engine and they do not have a wide power band and when they come up on their power band they can be violent on power delivery but that can be fun!
I will be modifying this engine more in the future and I will install a reed valve induction on this engine to widen the power band and tame the power delivery down a little and make the kart more tractable. These Rotax engines are found in various applications but are most common in Ski Doo snowmobiles like the Tundra 2,Citation,Skandic,just to name a few models and one can buy OEM and aftermarket parts for them. This is why I use this engine but that is just me and their are other options such as Dirt Bike engines etc,but the challenge for me and my fellow racers are is making a kart that has one gear ratio and have some fun trying to make it perform better.

I'm jealous every single time :D

I liked the angry ticking of the stinger,
but I think driving it without earprotection is now much more feasible
and it still sounds really nice (well as far as I can make a judgement from that short idle.. *hint hint* :D)

Oh, and personally I'd like to see the engine mods... all the WIP stuff too..
sometimes I just like to sit back and drool into my keyboard ;)

Yeah I liked the sound too but I have gained a little more top end with the silencer installed on the pipe without the noise!
I will be posting some of my engine mods in the near future and I will show how I am going to reed valve this engine and alter the ignition curve to my liking. There is a lot more to be had with this engine and who knows I might even install a reed valved cylinder on this engine with a variable exhaust valve so I can have it all!
(hint)

Ok,
So I will be starting on the frame for the kart that I am going to build for my wife now that things have slowed down a bit for me I will be out in the shop this winter to build the thing.

Meanwhile here is a photo of one of my buddies kart that he is building he has copied my frame design and I have built him and modified a Yamaha ET250 snowmobile engine to use on his kart and I will be teaching him how to make an expansion chamber for this engine.

DD,

I never was a fan of those Azusa Tri Stars but they are growing on me with those wider lawnmower style tires on there. Keep up the good work. I always enjoy your builds.

I am not a big fan of them either but I have a bunch of them that I received as payment for a debt that was owed to me so I have sold some to my fellow racers and I am going to use the rest of them up.Thank you for the kind words!

Well Bret, I'm almost sure I said it already..
I think you should sell some of your frames (well make some to be sold that is)

By now you should be pretty much able to build them blindfolded,
plus from all we've seen so far they're much safer than most of the yard karts out there,
and that would keep many "I want 20hp++" guys safe;
and as a side effect it might leave a dollar or two in your pocket
(to buy an AixRo one day for example ;))

Yes Sid I have built and helped build a few of these karts and I have ran the crap out of mine with no failures so far. This design is not for everyone but I know for a fact that indeed it handles a lot of power and rough service.I do have all of the angles and cuts down to a simple method to build the frame but I don't think that I could make much money building them! I would love a AixRo Wankel engine to play around with that would be great!

I kinda know you did,
that's exactly why I think at least a dozen users over the past few months would have good use for your frame design.
I don't think you'll be rich in a week either, but who knows ;)

Anyways...
I still have aixro on my "classified" alerts...
if one shows up for a reasonable price I'll let you know

Yes let me know for sure about any wankel engines that you might see or parts for them if that is not asking too much.
