A couple of comments, if I may:

Looks like it may be difficult to get into & out of :huh:

Them U-bolt extensions are OK for mock-up
...but for actual use, I would get or make proper length ones :cheers2:

It will probably be too tough to get in and out of for an adult unfortunately 😆 I think the kids will be fine though, they have the flexibility for some acrobacy😉

Good point on the u-bolts, will look into new ones before final assembly after paint👍😀

Next up brakes. The design is rear brakes only and I would like them to be good and reliable. The KLF300 rear axle came with oem brake wires, one a bit longer than the other. Neither are long enough to reach the brake pedal, but the difference in length lends itself nicely to letting the two cables meet under the seat on the left side of the frame. This piece was made from some 5mm (~3/16’’) scrap:

Now I needed to terminate the wire housing at the axle end. I started with some 10mm (~3/8’’) flat + the oem hangers:









Pieces tacked in place:





Cables installed:



Next up will be going from 2 to 1 cable and connecting it to a brake pedal.

To complicate things as usual, I would like the pedals to be forward/rear adjustable😎

I have started on the brake pedal assy. Like I mentioned, the idea is to make it adjustable for different leg lengths. So far I have got half a plan and this:

Machined this out of some 30x30mm square profile:



And this out of some round stock:



Botched a motorcycle footrest:



And a motorcycle gear pedal:



Did this out of some 10x100mm flat bar:



Where is this going? ;)

If there was supposed to be a picture it didn't show up. Nice barrow rod however, almost makes me want to "quit wasting time" with mine every time I see yours.

I have similar issues with different sized folks and mine, I'll be doing hand controls most likely so the issue of reaching or not reaching pedals, in my case, overreaching the pedals.

Keep up the fantastic work, it will be something to be proud of when it's finished for sure!

It could be a Tapatalk thing where the pictures may not want to load properly. I can see all of the new ones just fine.

I quickly changed the idea about using the motorcycle parts to fabricate a pedal. Instead I am making 2 identical scratch built pedals:

Started out with the ‘’arms’’. Squared off 2 workpieces in 6061 aluminum:



And made them subject to some treatment at the mill:









Continued with the ‘’pads’’ (where you actually put the foot :) ):




There is going to be quite a bit more work on these, more to follow

Continued on the adjustable pedal assys. Some of this may not make sense just yet but bare with me, it will be clear what I am up to :)

Squared off 4 workpieces in 10mm flat steel:



Milled a relief in the 4 pieces:



Drilled some holes in them and prettied them out a bit:

Well I needed 2 of this part anyway and making 2 new ones is as easy as making 1 more:

Work on the pedal assys, time to button it all up :)


Drilled and tapped the stud that will hold the brake pedal:



Made a stop collar and test fit the pedal:



Now the cable hose retention got some attention:









Pedal pads received some finishing treatment:





Installed the pedal stud and hose retention on the sliding part of the assy. They are press fit and will be welded on the back side:



Finsihed off the brake pedal:

Nice machine work! I don’t have the space now but next home will have enough shop space for at least a manual mill & lathe...maybe a cnc. Haha

I'm just hoping the front end's the only place you're using a straight-axle. Those beefy rear tires are going to need a real differential to turn with. Oops! Now a whole bunch of pictures came up. That's a real one alright. Looks like it's from an actual automobile. Looks like a short wheelie bar might hedge some bets later too. Unsprung rear, was it? Let some air out of those big meats for a softer ride. Love the use of Unistrut on the controls, infinite adjustment there, smart application. (Retired HVACR guy here.)

So, the motor arrived and it was time to mount it :)



Installed the TQ on the engine and mocked it up:








I whipped together these motor mounts:






Then drilled them, mounted the engine onto them and tacked the assembly onto the frame :cheers2::

Next logical step was to mount the pedal assemblies on the kart. After actually seeing the engine on the cart, it was clear that space was going to be a scarce resource. Based on that, the idea was to mount the pedals as close to the engine as possible for maximum leg space while not being too close to operate them properly. I came up with this way of mounting the assys:



....and welded in:





After having mounted them, I trial sat one of the kids in the kart. Turns out the kids are outgrowig the kart as it is getting built!:smiley_omg:

I had to make it bigger and I started with removing the steering wheel assembly /cowl loop:




Here my son is trial sitting with the steering and seat back in the new position; around 3’’ back from the original position. I also mocked up a seat back to get him in a reasonable driving position. I believe the geometry is fine and the pedals can still go forward a couple inhces still:

The creator of this Radio Flyer Rod put the foot pegs and pedals outside the body for more space, and that's what I plan to do. In contrast, Carsanscameras' Rat Rod wagon has them inside, and well, they've said it themselves, it's not comfortable at high speeds.

Just throwin' that out there.

The wheelbarrow tub needed some kind of support in the back, and I thought it was also time to think about seat belts. I have bought a 4-point belt on ebay, more on that later. I started out with some steel tube and some scrap plate:






In the heat of the moment I forgot to take any more pics during the fab process, but the result is perhaps self explanatory. The 4-point harness attaches to the hols in the corner pieces:

Time to get the brakes working. I needed a couple of pieces to button it all together; a bracket holding the cable coming from the brake pedal and a piece joining the 3 cables (one form each wheel + the one form the pedal) together. I also needed to move the bracket holding the cables coming form the rear wheels - moving the steering and rear axle back made the brake cables too short :lolgoku:



Anyway, I ended up with a working brake and here it is: :cheers2:
