What type of axle should I have?

Yes! !!! that is a live axle setup...(maybe a Carter Bros?)

The "Heavy" kart I worked on for OrangeKrate's mini series was exactly like that. Bearings press into the flanged ends of that tube,a keyed alxe with threaded ends holds keyed rims in place with a double hub on the drive side.

We need a measurement of that tube...plus the ID for the bearings and we can help advise you!

Sooo...just to get started: a good rule of thumb would be 6" on each side outside the tube....so...42" however..I really think you need 48"....(offset to drive side) Ideally, only keyed on the ends and threaded. Yeah 3/4" would be a good axle....(it might have even been 5/8" originally) ....and basically...because of the proximity of the bearing to the sprocket and bearings to wheels...actually isn't bad. Typically, live axle hangars are further away from the wheels.

Sooo..That's a start...I could search for the parts, but I can't give you a link, and there are guys that are better than me at that....

You didn't answer my question as to how tall a tire you want in the back. 6" keyed hubs shouldn't be too hard to find....but it's gotta start with the axle....ideally...we can find a 3/4 and 5/8" .....then bearings......then hubs, wheels, sprocket, brakes and clutch.

Seems like the easiest tire to find is the 145/70-6 so I'll probably stick with that.

Also I think I'd rather avoid the jackshaft and save the TC for down the road if possible.

I agree for simplicity and budget sake. But...
The design of that kart kinda requires it. ( I think)

With the axle in the Tube, there is no way to out a Sprocket on the Axle lined up with the motor clutch sprocket.
Thats why I said I do not know too much about your Kart style.
Can you fabricate stuff, Weld etc?.
I can... So if it were mine I would cut that axle tube off and the Jackshaft mount and welds in bearing hangars and a more typical live axle setup.

I realized something else too. since yesterday. You would need 3/4 hubs and new rear wheels for the current setup and 3/4" axle. $$$$
I just donno bout this one.

Any way he goes....there's going to be money involved. He's gotta get wheels, some type of axle system and brakes.

To me it just seems like a jackshaft is going to be the easiest way to go....but for a little less money, and a LOT more fab...he could convert it to a one wheeled wonder.

So I couldn't weld a motor mount in place of the jackshaft mount and just have the sprocket to the outside of the frame and run a clutch and chain straight to the axle?

While I don't want to spend a fortune on this thing, I'm not SO worried about cost only because this will be a pretty drawn out project. My son is only four so he can't even drive it yet.
I have the time to space out buying parts.
