To the best of my knowledge you can't bolt an electric start onto a B&S 5hp, however, you could do it Ghetto style; electric motor to the flywheel instead of the recoil housing, but this I do not recommend.

...not to mention the extra weight.
Real men use rope/cup starters. Cheap, light, and cannot fail...ever.

i had a tec with the starter cup. i hated it. poorly designed. my fav so far would have to be the briggs recoil ball clutch thing

Actually real men use kick starters.
How would you know???:roflol:

Briggs recoils are good but do have one drawback. On occasion I've had the need to turn crankshaft in clockwise direction. Can't be done with recoil in place. It's a minor thing, but still bugs me. As far as I know, Briggs owns the rights to this system and therefore is/was the only manufacturer to use it.

My dad has an old tecumpseh kick starter from the 50s, real neat, he has a few cast iron block 5hp tecs from the same time period that the kicker will fit (2 loose ones and a tiller model mounted on a tiller that does the garden every once in a while). Old iron FTW.

I dont like the briggs clutches, enigne backfires? Broken rope. Let it sit for a long time? Clutch seizes too shaft. I prefer the hand wound rope starters over everyhting else, only part that can break(rope+handle) can be made in less than 10 minutes.

Tune your engine better and it will start better. If you really really really want to make it electric start, I would suggest you post some pictures of the motor with the flywheel housing removed.

Real men kick start motors with their teeth.

Don't know that it can be done. Might require specific block that will accept a self starter. May just need mouting hardware. Someone else may know.
Flywheel will have to changed, circuitry added, as well as a place for mounting battery. Do you want a charging system as well? Add an alternator/regulator.
