I think perhaps having a geared ATV like-starter would perhaps work in conjunction with a jackshaft or 2, but It would be unnecessarily complicated. If you wanted to prove it could be done, go ahead, but it you just want to turn the key and go, the 6.5 electric start is what you need.

Would require a special block. Problem with the 6.5s is you gotta run em box stock, no modding cause your stuck with that flywheel. Unless ARC will make a geared flywheel for you.

With all due respect I do belive he wanted to make his readily avaible 5 hp briggs electric start and not pay $205 for a clone. Now I know my Tecumsea 5 hp has 2 mounting screws on the block and a geared flywheel. I think it was a 120 VAC starter though.

Easiest way to mod a motor without the geared flywheel is probably having a geared jackshaft, both with a clutch, and with your electric motor attached. This is easier then lengthening a stock output shaft.

(Off Topic, but the Recoil starter on a Victa is actually geared into the flywheel, via flywheel teeth...electric project?)

get a sprocket press a one way bearing onto it then slip that over your engine shaft then connect this sprocket to suitable electric motor then you also have the problem of you batter going dead

imo it would be cheeper to get an electric start engine in the first place and i am sure it would work much better

For the hassle and $$$ of modifying and adding a starter to the 5HP B&S, the Electric Start 6.5HP clone would do the job better. $205 is cheap for a well equipped 6.5. Especially for a karting newbie in this case.

However, if someone wants to fill the original poster in the proper way to mod his briggs, I'm all for it. It was just the egotistical comments of what a REAL man means, which is nothing but a bunch of society nonsense, and was not helping at all with the post.

I wouldn't bother trying to make the 5HP an electric start (just opinion), if you have the money, and just get the clone with it built in.

G racer basicly what everyone is trying to tell you is that there is no cheap way to convert the 5hp engine you have to an electric start. I know you already have that engine but with the money you will spend trying to convert that engine you could buy a Honda clone with E-start for about the same amount.

E start is nothing but trouble, its another(rather delicate) thing to break on a machine that likes to break a lot. Go karts are rather high maintenance things. Pushing a button is cool but is it worth all the batteries you will rattle apart?
