Get me a push mower and ill show you. Its as easy as draining the oil, remove sidecover, make rod dipper, rotate carb, make engine mount, and possibly re-work a few other things such as exhaust and recoil. That can easily be done in a week, or at least i could, not sure about you.

I could get it done in an afternoon if I wasn't busy with more important projects, its not that difficult at all, the odd shaft size is going to be the biggest hurdle with mine. I could probably get a Victa from still on the mower to running as a horizontal shaft in about an hour (coz I've done it so many times!), the person I'm building this engine for wants a four stroke though :(.

I'm in Canada,

What if I moved the fuel pump to where the oil is at 90 degrees?

The oil pump is probably cast in, I'm not sure though, we don't see many Tecumsehs here in Australia, especially vertical shafts.
You might be able to make up up a pick up tube for it but as I said, I'm not sure. You'd need some good skill with small piping and soldering though.

Thanks

Hayden

okay thanks a lot,

I'm going to tinker with it but its definitely not going on my cart.
Maybe after some tinkering and a little more experience I can use it for my next project.
At the moment, I may be getting an old engine off ebay if shipping isn't too bad, or I'm going to go searching for a similar type of engine.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/USED-5-HP-Tecums...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item335bd7e55c
That is the cheapest one at the moment, still waiting on the price of shipping but maybe i'll buy it just for kicks. When I get the frame done i'll make a new thread and post my progress so you guys can judge. I'll probably be making a video blog aswell.

Thanks For all the help guys!!!!!

You really dont think its possible in a week? Shipping will probably be a decent amount. If you dont mind waiting a while for me to prove my point, i have a 12.5 vert briggs, i can start that in a few weeks. Need to get a few other engines off the bench first.

Engine completed and reliably propelling a gokart? Nope.
I insist on you using my engine. I'll pay shipping.
All I ask in return is that all work be done by you and documented here on diygokarts.
You can keep the engine.

The object, I thought, was to make a 4 cycle Briggs kart worthy within a week.
Makes sense that to check it, it would have to be assembled to a kart and put through it's paces.
To make engine run in horizontal position is definitely do-able in a week.
To have it successfully power a kart is a different story.

Addendum:
Upon closer scrutiny, I'm not so sure that a dipper is really necessary.
Stock oil slinger may be enough as long as it's in contact with oil.

bench mount the engine to run a fan or something
I tried that once...could have been killed. Bent the crankshaft. Window fan blades aren't very well balanced for high speed.

On my engine the lowest point of the slinger (with the engine turned to horizontal position) is about 1cm below the lowest part of the crank, it could be possible but a lot of oil would inevitably hit the crank and big end.

Most useless post of the year...

i guess we completely misunderstood each other. However, i still think its doable to convert it, and have it power a kart within a week, IF the kart is already set up for your average 5hp briggs, and all throttle linkages are intact. It would be as easy as welding up mounts (30-60 mins tops), throttle linkage, chain linkage, and possibly making a custom exhaust.

It does make sense to test it on a go kart, however leaving it idle on a bench for an hour or two would be a good test too.

I still have my scrap kart frame, which was made in 6 or 7 days, i may break into that this summer and re-do a few things that failed (mainly rear axle and shock mounts). If i do, i will need an engine to power it, and it will probably be that vert 12 horse briggs, or maybe the 18 twin. If so i'll see if it can be done in a week, and document it.

Pretty much finished the dipper now, just got to put it back together and sort out a few things, I should have it going by the end of the week.

Thanks

Pics and Vids would be great!

Yeah, I've got some pics (I'l post them tomorrow), I don't have a video camera and I don't think video would really help anyone anyway. If a video on my phone comes out okay I might post it. I really need torque specs for the rod and the side case, if anyone has them it would be of great help! The model type code is 10908 0441-01 79073004.

Thanks

The engine's back together now, just got to sort out the stupid dipstick, the breather and the carby. Hopefully I'l be able to get the pictures up later. I took them on a really dodgy camera phone, might not work.

Thanks

Okay, every thing's sorted now, the engine is ready to run, pulled the starter a couple of times and it fired but didn't run, had to go to work so I haven't had a good chance to mess with it since it's been back together. I'l try again tomorrow morning. I'm having trouble up loading pictures because the stupid phone wont connect to the computer, hopefully I'l have that sorted soon too.

Thanks

Hayden
