I'm going to be converting a Briggs and Sratton lawnmower engine to run horizontal shaft, I will be logging what I do on here.

Okay, to start off with here's the donor mower.

(You gota love the ghetto kill swich and muffler!)

Just to give you an idea of its state of neglect, the base and engine were originally painted black... I got it going though, it had the most fouled plug I have ever seen! The insulator was FULL of carbon and the electrode was covered in a huge mas of what appeared to be grease and carbon! Anyway, I got it going. It's got a stupid auto choke mechanism which doesn't work, you have to hold the actual choke butterfly open for the engine to run. Anyways it runs really rough and doesn't rev very high but thats good enough for me lol

Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove this stupid spacer sleeve thingy on the crank?? It seems to be pressed on and I can't get it off!

Thanks

Hayden

Just to clear things up a bit, I'm going to be changing the oiling system so it will run as a horizontal shaft engine, not adding a RAGB or anything.

The Model-Type-Code is:

10908 0441-01 79073004

Could some one please decipher it for me? It would be highly appreciated if you did!

Thanks

Well .............. if you're real careful, crank up the grinder with a cutting disc on it and cut the spacer in half. You gotta be REAL careful to slice only the spacer, though, not the shaft. Done that a few times, worked so far .....

I'm looking forward to this! Keep us up to date on your progress!

Will do! Progress will probably be slow for quite a while though as its stinking hot out side (its the middle of summer over here) and I'l be going away soon, it will hopefully be finished by the end of February.

i agree with nerfo! i have no idea how to but take plenty of pictures!

Yeah I will, if you guys need pictures of anything in particular just let me know, I'l post them up for you!

Thanks, I might try doing it with the dremel cut off wheels, don't really trust myself with the big grinder lol. I'l try and borrow an oxy first though.

Thanks

Well my spacer was on the victa so the shaft came out the other end but this is how i did it. I clamped the spacer in the vice real hard then hit the end of the shaft. As the engine is already real heavy it makes things easy. Leaving the spacer behind in the vice and letting the engine go. Get someone to hold the engine so it doesnt drop on the floor.

This video shows how to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LF3QgZlEEA

Im not sure how u would do it as the shaft doesnt go right the way through but maybe if u got a little piece of metal axle that fits in there nicely, then u can clamp the spacer in the vice and hit the shaft with the the piece of axle.

Hope that helps.

Buy one, with an air chisel in one hand, and a (made in Milwaukee!) Sawzall in the other, you will NEVER look at things the same way.

I actually bought a brand new Milwaukee "heavy duty" 14" chop saw last month was appald to see that it was made in China. My Craftsman bench and angle grinders were both made in China too. I KNEW I was buying a cheap, made in China, clone engine... and I paid very little for it. But when I pay top dollar for a quality tool... well, I was very dissapointed.

Thanks Brendonv! And OMG I thought I had a problem with having tons of mowers! My collection is nothing compared to that! *mower envy* . Anyways lol, The shaft does go all the way through, there is about half a cm of it poking out.

heat up the spacer with a torch and use a gear puller to get it off

I don't have access to an oxy, or a gear puller. I live basically in the middle of no where so I can't just go out and buy tools, also the ones that I could buy are ****ing expensive! The CHEAPEST clone within 400 kilometers of me is $299 (not a misprint), cheapest air compressor is $140 and thats a little ****ty one. Living where I live sucks lol.

Pretty simple, just have to make an oil dipper and remove the stock slinger (which is normally the governor gear so you would have to remove the governor too).

Yeah, thats pretty much what I was thinking, depends what the oil slinger is like, I might be able to modify it a bit, we'll see when I crack the cases open I guess?

I know some Honda mower engines had a rod dipper built into them (I can get the names of them for you if you want) as well as the oil slinger so it didn't matter if you tilted the mower right back, I can't see why they wouldn't run as a horizontal shaft engine? The GMC mower you can see in the 1st picture has a copy of one I believe (newish mower with the black base) but thats got a dead coil and GMC have gone bankrupt, I've been trying to find a coil that I can adapt to it (most won't clear the teeth on the fly wheel, its electric start) no luck so far...

Thanks

To get that spacer thing off just get an angle grinder with a cutting wheel on it. Then just cut both sides off. Its okay if you cut the crank a bit. A small cut never hurt anyone! Just a warning lawnmower flywheels aren't heavy enough. They are more like a cooling fan, the blade is the real flywheel. Good luck!

Yeah, I'l cut it off with the angle grinder bit on the Dremel if I can't get it off in the vice.

It runs fine without the baseplate (yes, I did try it), it back firers when you try and start it though.

Thanks
