Mine lets you. As you move along, you can depress the clutch just enough to slack the belt without engaging the brake, and upshift smoothly. It does not make any noises that suggest it doesn't like it. It's probably not recommended in the manual, but as I said, no noise.

When I took mine for a ride I just yanked on the lever and shifted in the go. With all the weight in the rear it's a wheelie machine

Whats your top speed? Because im getting alot of "tranny is gonna burn up" in other forums.

I was reccomended to use 90wt oil. Im guessing thats much lighter than stock?

Parts might be impossible to find since it is a tecumseh. I googled it and nothing.

Have you split the trans apart yet? If not, you probably should at some point before you run it. It will most likely be full of a grayish-white bentonite grease, or if the grease has dried up the entire thing will be full of crusty bentonite clay. You'll need to pressure wash it out (bentonite grease is used for its water resistance) or clean it out with solvent and replace the grease with some kind of oil, perhaps 90w as has already been suggested to you, perhaps something a little thinner like 75-90w, it doesn't really matter. The only difference you'll notice with thicker lube is difficulty shifting when the unit is cold.

but will thicker grease have too much resistance for high speed?

Call me stupid but I don't really think the thickness of the grease will hurt the speed too much. It would really have to be the consistency of play-doh to do that.

You mean oil? That's why I was sneakily suggesting that you use thinner 75-90w instead of straight 90w (which is thick like molasses until it's hot). You could even use straight 30w or straight 40w motor oil, which would also be cheaper since the trans probably holds at least 2 litres of lube. Realistically though, the oil in your trans won't be the limiting factor in your top speed.

As for your transmission lube, I would use regular 70-90w gear oil.

It'll be fine!

Some grease-packed mower trannies are grease-packed because they do not have proper oil-retaining seals. This is done to save money. If your tranny does not have seals, you will fill it with oil, and it will drool it all back out. Dismantle your tranny and inspect this. If you have no seals, you will have to use grease. Now, the speed becomes an issue- the grease is flung off the gears because of the speed, and then things start to fail.

You'd have to get very creative. If you could find some existing seals of an appropriate size, you could take tranny to a machine shop and have some recesses machined into the tranny to accept them.

no turning back now.

i put the tranny against the wall, with the bolts out, came back 20 mins later and the oil is all over the floor.

if its oil, at least you know its got the seals! look out for burning out the tranny! thats where the idea of using the trans axle as a jack shaft/ transmission.

i know, but i cant afford an axle and all the stuff to set it up. i figure ill get the transmission as clean as possible and then probably add in motor oil.

well today is the first day of vacation, not in a good mood since i just found out what the clutch teeth look like on my brand new build mini bike.

it has less than an hour on it probably.

ugh i hate chain drive...

My tranny has no seals I coated all the parts inside with bearing grease and hoped for the best. As far as my top speed I'm not sure I didn't have the throttle hooked up we were using a wire tied on pulling it by hand so as soon as I run the throttle cable I'll find out

I have a 6" on the motor and a 4 1/2" on the trans. It was partially built when I got it so i can't take credit for it all. Here's a pic of the whole thing
