finally, the frame is DONE

i put some patches in the left side of the cab... not a great job but it will do...

POR15 arrived

gas tank before por15

my hand after por15

i spent all day long welding and painting (por15) i got everything done and painted:

underside of bed, frame, rear end, cab floor, gas tank, some metal hoses and gas tank filler

pictures of the paint tomorrow because it got too dark

im a dumbass for not wearing gloves

you don't look that dirty. you should come work on my ram charger. i usually come out from under it black.

not that dirty but it is permanent. it will probably be on my hands for a week at least.:ack2:

scrubbed my hands and nothing

i even sprayed starter fluid on my hands pretty extreme but it didnt even mess with the paint ):

my hands also stay dirty for almost a week when i work on my ram charger. you can only clean off so much of the oil and rust before it almost seem to really stick to the top layer of skin. i have used hand cleaners and automotive cleaners and they only get you so far.

Well then dip your finger in POR15 amd tell us what you think after that. LOL

Blue it depends on how thick it got on your hands. About 3 days for not so bad stains. But weeks for bad stains. Hands wear off fast though. Arms will keep the por15 for weeks though.

I did not see any medal ready and marine clean? If you skipped that part do not cry when it fails or if it fails. People skip the chemical part all the time then claim por15 sucks.

Have you tried lava soap and a good plastic bristle? That combo usually does the trick.

i dont think the POR15 will come off. i got rid of any lose pieces of rust. and the PO coated a small part of the frame the same way i did it and it still looks perfect over a year later

some pics

here is how i bypassed the rear tank's vent/emissions tube. i removed the 3 way splitter piece and both hoses. then i took the piece of hose off the actual gas tank and cut it, and added it in

now the piece that connects to the gas tank was too short, but i used some small engine's fuel line to extend it. it is correct to have the large diameter connect to the small diameter. it was stock like this.

left side rocker panel!!!! brand new. the wiring that went to the door-turn-on-light switch was corroded and would stop working soon, so i spliced it a little shorter. also the seat belt warning buzzer wire was ripped off at the buckle, so i just removed those wires from the harness completely, and re-taped everything

in a half hour the bed will be back on !

one of the next things i will do is connect a toggle switch for the high beams. right now it has a little foot pedal switch, and its hard to press sometimes especially on a manual when you have to use both feet. i really havent used the high beams much anyways

How much por15 did you use?

some people get lucky not using the 3 step. I have seen others when it comes off in big sheets. I think you will be okay though. Most cases I seen it come off in sheets it was low rust steel. I think you had plenty of rust to soak up the por15. Just don't bash por15 if it sheets off.

Hats off to you for doing this truck at your age. And doing it to a 4X4 truck as well. Good smart choice IMO. Endless derection with a truck from having fun to making money.

Don't go hacking up a perfectly good wiring harness. It's not like your foot is that preoccupied by the clutch. If it is, you're doing something wrong. What is this, a 4 speed w/ granny gear first?

the paint came off in one piece out of the container

having a truck has been great, i have already made a couple hundred out of scrapping things and hauling leaves and logs and brush

the bed is on! only problem is the frame sticks out too much and interferes with the back of the bed, so it raised it up about 1/2". it looks a lot higher though. maybe its just because the bumper isnt on yet.

the gas tank was a pain in the *** to get attached. the straps were flat. i had to bend them into the right shape and even then it was really hard to get them to stretch long enough to bolt up.

but its all good, will be driving tomorrow :wai:

i think you should keep the stomp switch. i have one in my 81 and i like it. the only thing that sucks about them is the do tend to fail a lot more often than the newer ones but they are dirt cheap and easy to install. plus i doubt you will really need to use it that much. most of the time when someone is driving they only use there lows and its not like your foot should be sitting on the clutch peddle when you are not using it.

yeah thats true. maybe ill just put it back. but there really isnt anything to attach it to anymore

i think the truck is going to stay as-is for a while. because i owe my parents like $100 still for the welder. and this weekend im trading stuff for a yamaha YZ125 with a blown motor. i have tried looking for jobs but nothing yet.

and my parents said i have to fix the speedometer before i spend money on anything else

so im gonna scrap more stuff, and hopefully use the truck to make some $ hauling brush/logs/leaves this weekend

gotta go attach the bumper, then take it for a test drive today!

Ah, nice:thumbsup:

If you really want betters lights. just get some off-road lights and a wiring harness.lol that'll help!

I don't know about this generation truck, but on the older generations with relay-less headlight circuits, you can get a plug-and-play relay kit that shortens the headlight circuit and brightens up the stock bulbs quite a bit.

the truck worked ok. today other than my brake light is on, (WHY? brand new brake lines, new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, new brake rebuild kit, bled the brakes and they are perfect, and the resivoir is full. all new brake fluid. the brakes feel normal.

also there is an occasional squealing. not very loud, and only happens for a couple seconds every few miles.

and there is the most annoying- a LOUD rattle. louder than the engine. it happens over 20 mph and gives me a headache. i am 99% sure it is the tail gate hinges. the tail gate rattles and squeaks like crazy

also when i press the brake the rears squeak a little
