Well, I got the little engine started today and it runs pretty good. The only problem is the carb is without an idlle circuit and it has no mixture screws. Can someone recommend a good replacement that is adjustable, I can bolt on without too much trouble?

Would need pics, and measurements of distance between mounting bolt holes. You can bolt a correctly sized harmonic carb on there and have it run in any position.

Tough to get. Tecumseh part number I have is for diaphragm carb and is 632117 or tec632117. I purchased it in 11/06 but has since been discontinued.
Another possibility is to build one using what is called a service carb (bowl, not diaphragm). I can try to get you part numbers if interested. Should run around $60 from manufacturer.
Almost any Tecumseh carb should fit, as long as it comes from an engine that is under 7hp. Trick is to find one that is NOT emissions compliant, meaning it would have high and low speed adjustment needles.

Thanks for the help and fast response guys!

Russ, I'm interested in any P/Ns you can provide!

The engine model is HXL 840. I lucked out, this one has a straight 3/4 shaft. Sure wish it had a better carb. I'll have to check with our grounds mechanic, he may have something laying around that I can use. If not, I'll go ahead and order one!

I got the carb off, here's the measurements and some pics.
Bolts centers are 1 7/8"
Bore size 13/16"

No prob. I will just need a day or so to go through my notes.
Bolt pattern is standard stuff. Very common. Just look for 2 needle setup. High speed needle will be on bottom of bowl and low speed will be on side of body.

This is for 8hp and higher. Possible it will work but might run too lean. Bad news for 2 cycle engines.
The 2 bosses I circled (red) in attached will not be present on correct size carb. Low speed screw is circled in blue.

Ok Russ...I'll keep looking around!

Thanks for all the help!

I'll keep researching. I see some of these are China copies and I tend to stay away. I messed around with Mikuni's on two strokes years ago and I'm somewhat confident. I may try one as long as the jets are available. Somtimes I get lucky trying different stuff, somtimes I get myself in trouble!...lol

Maybe just go down to your local small engine shop with the engine? The shop by me has like 5 massive bins full of carbs, easily 1000 carbs.
