Uh i hate the engines but its the only engine that i have at the moment that is any good. Would oil come out if the govenor arm hole or just the head cover gasket

The best way to.tell is to clean it up real good and run it until you see a wet spot. Make sure the block vents are working right, because anything will puke oil with positive crankcase pressure.

They tend to weep out the gov hole cause there no seal there. And remember, these were made to just idle and bounce on a lawnmower, not be flung around on the back of a kart.

Did you remove the gov assembly?
Pics help.

And as FHB said, clean it well and run a little while and look for the wet spots.

Ok the govenor wasnt removed i ended up fixing two leaks but the govenor arm still leaks would it be best to remove the govenor and put a bolt there? Also how would i set up the throttle to use the stock mechinism? Heres pictures of the leak

To setup the throttle for performance, remove all current throttle and governor components, the carburetor and airbox (leave the manifold thingy). Go on the web and get a cheap chikuni 22mm and filter, and a long enough throttle cable. The carb should almost be a direct swap, the throttle will be much easier to setup, and you'll have more power. Plus, the carb won't gum up as easily.

I 2nd the $13 ebay carb advice. I will add that I drilled the main jet out to .033” to get the right mixture.

I would also like to add:

1) Governor arm may have worn out the aluminum block enough to create a large clearance.
2) your rings may be so badly worn that the crankcase pressure is building so fast that air needs another way out beyond the valve cover vent.

Thanks guys i ruled out thst this ingine is indeed a beater im probably throwing either a slide carb or a 212 carb on it. And buying a new 212 hemi for it

Get a Non Hemi (pn 69730). I've always had luck with the non hemis. I've only owned one hemi, and I won't buy another. The thing was revving 4800rpm out of the box (governor grenading rpm), and was backfiring hard every time I let off the gas. Also it shook like crazy.

I have been doing some filming hemi vs non hemi and can tell you this

They both make about the same HP.
Hemi has quality control problems(core shift on intake side noted).

so J.S.@SMS, is it not normal for an engine to back fire when you let off the gas? I always figured it was the compression release opening because the engine is slowing down. i have a non hem and have heard Hondas do it too.

After fire in the exhaust is either a too rich mix that burns through the cycle and is still burning out the exhaust. This happens on acceleration.

If it blows fire on deceleration, it's cause by to lean of an idle jet. The carb closing puts the cylinder in a lean condition and it quits burning. A few cycles happen till it gets a little fuel and ignites the fuel mix that has now passed into the exhaust. Or the hot exhaust ignites it.

Back fire is when it blows flames back out the carb. Usually when timing is not set correctly.

Every once in a while, a little exhaust popping on deceleration is enjoyable for me.
Just not when the neighbors are out. :cornut:

But yes, like Whitetrashrocker said, a true backfire blows flames through the carb, usually with catastrophic results(i.e huge fire, explosion).

Exhaust popping isn't as big a deal and easily fixable.

Well the intake runner between the filter and the carb was melted a bit inside, so I don't think it was the exhaust. And there was still the matter of 4800rpm with the governor still installed.
