Stealerships.

The newest service writer we had was selling coolant flushes to customers for months, before the boss finally informed him that our coolant flush machine had been broken for years. (drain and fills cost less)

I got sick of the dealership BS, so I'm looking at moving to an independent shop. For now, I'm in Scandinavia, taking pictures and enjoying the lower drinking age :D

I would have absolutely lost it on the guy...

:funnypost::lolgoku:

So, if you would get wound up enough to risk legal issues over something like that, what would you have done if someone told you a piece of machinery needed $10~$15 grand in spindle bearings, when all it really needed was a couple of hundred bucks worth of drive belts? Inquiring minds would like to know.......

:funnypost::lolgoku::thumbsup:

The professional auto mechanics around here most likely know more about all around auto maintenance that I do (they better!!!!), but I can state with extreme confidence that I'm probably the shady mechanic/car dealership/ supposed service center's worst nightmare. Anyone who tries to tell me that the supposed problem is too complex for me to understand the details of what's supposedly wrong will usually figure out that they've made a really bad mistake pretty quickly. It's either me getting in their face about it, or when the appropriate State Gov't agency knocks on their door...

Here's a quick question for the pro's here (I fix/work on/operate other things); if someone brings you a compact pickup with a manual transmission, that suddenly starts making noise when you depress the clutch pedal, and is hard to shift using the clutch, yet can be shifted between gears smoothly by lining up the RPM's between gears, like when driving a big truck (CDL holder here), do you A] tell them that the clutch is fine, they have a blown transmission; but we're going to be in there anyways so we should do the clutch too, or B] tell the owner what it'll cost to open the thing up, and actually determine what the problem is? (Hint; don't tell the owner that the only place they can get the trans. worked on/replaced is some mystery no name 3rd party supplier w/ only a 3m/3000 mi warranty when they can walk down the hall to the dealer/ factory parts counter to double check, and find that they can get a factory new trans, with a 3yr/ 36,000 mi warranty for $100.00 less than the no name box)

One more hint/question before I return you to the scheduled thread: just how fragile is a Borg Warner T-5 transmission when it's behind a 2.2L 4 cyl. making ~120 HP? You know, that weak, wimpy, hand grenade, throw away box that both Ford (5.0 Mustang/Thunderbird Turbo Coupe) and GM (Camaro/Firebird, various apps) just grab at when they can't get anything else, and just don't care about any warranty issues... that's what they tried to sell me....

I may have been born at night, but I wasn't born LAST night....

But if the diff bearing got to that state then better not speak too soon

I'd be checking the wheel bearings
They are ment to be repacked fairly regularly anyway

Most wheel bearings these days are sealed units, however i agree a solid once over would be a good idea. I'd imagine its due for ball joints and possibly some wheel bearings.

lol yeah I am a little hesitant about taking it to a mechanic I have had some bad experiences with the ones out here. One of them changed my belts , left them super loose and then argued with me when I asked him to fix it right. Last one that was fixing my mom rear breaks on her mercedes ended up breaking the cup holder for some weird reason . I hope the same jackass doesnt end up breaking something inside my truck when changing my bearing underneath my truck on the drive shaft . I will be f@*#ing pissed if he does .:horse:

My favorite experience: Firestone. I took my Eagle Talon there a few years back (its been since sold) to have new 17" rims put on it. Honestly I could have done it myself but I had just bought them and was leaving town in a half hour and really, really wanted to show them off, and didn't have time to get them all on myself before i left. Long story short, THEY snapped off 1 stud on two separate rims, and then tried to charge me 46 dollars PER STUD to replace them! Yea. I lost it.

Ha I didn't even see machinists and toystorys

It's defiantly the clutch machinist@large
If may be the clutch not pushing in far enough
It sounds stupid and I'm sure u have done it
Check clutch fluid and check any external linkages

Then it will be internal

As for the dodgy service rep
I wasn't paying for it
I just took the bill and have it to the accountants at work to sort out

Could be the pressure plate, clutch disk, release bearing, pilot bearing, linkages, etc.

More detail would be good- Forget going thru the gears. What does it do when starting off?

Yeah, I knew it was the clutch when I took it in; I'd been having a little trouble with it acting like it wasn't engaging/ disengaging properly (throwout bearing was shot and was trying to weld itself to the input shaft sleeve). The final straw was the loud bang I got out of it drag racing some fast& furious reject. Turns out I had managed to shear all the rivets holding the clutch lining on one side of the disk; came off in a near perfect ring, too.

The dealer that I listed was the one closest to work; I told them where to put their diagnoses, nursed the truck home, crawled under it, looked at what it was going to take to pull the tranny myself, and then nursed it into the dealer I had bought it from. They had all the equipment, and I had Zero time then, working 80 hour weeks. Clutch jobs aren't cheap; an 80 hour paycheck gave me decent change back when i went to get it, all for ~1/4 what dealer "A" wanted.....:cheers2::popcorn:

Got it fixed today , the mechanic gave me a good price so I went for it. I watched him while he installed the bearing and he did a pretty good job. The bearing was still intact but it was not attached to the rubber anymore . I was happy with the installation my truck is running like new again and i learned how to change it my self next time it needs replacement :auto:

I know this is a bit of a thread jack, but I thought since tundrabeagle had sorted his problem out I might ask a question or two without starting a new thread.

It also has to do with a clutch....this time on a VW Citi Golf. I have to say straight off that I know extremely little about clutches (or cars) so please bare with me.

I had my engine reconditioned at the beginning of the year. I bout a brand new clutch (pressure plate etc) and had that installed while they were doing the whole engine. The car ran great for 6 months, but now the clutch seems to be giving problems. I first though it was the clutch cable and had that replaced, but the problem still persists.

What happens is this - When you change gears (usually from 2nd to third or higher) you would press the clutch, change gears (yes its a manual), take your foot of the clutch and press the gas pedal again. What happens is that it seems like your are riding the clutch and not taking your foot off the clutch. It will rev up, and then suddenly let go and go back to normal. It feels like the clutch is slipping when it shouldn't be.

I have a mechanic friend who had put the clutch and engine back in (he works as a mechanic for Dodge). He said there is some little rod in the gearbox that pushes the clutch, and that it may be sticking. He took it apart and lubricated everything. The problem is still there though. It seems to do it more if you are going uphill, as if you have more load on the engine

Do you guys think that I just bought a dud clutch, or do you think it might be something else.

Here is a pic of the car

If you think I should move this to its own thread, please let me know

The second pic is of the main highway to work :D

I always thought all Africans rode eleghants
Although it appears u still need a car so they can carry it
We don't need cars as we just ride kangaroos
they are a bit faster though

Sounds like something is sticking for sure
Again I'd check all the external stuff
Pedal, cable ect

then id get your mate the mechanic to pull the clutch back out and investergate what's going on
Could be a similar issue to machinist

If there's no damage to the bearings or shafts then it could be the clutch
If the flywheel wasn't cleaned up before the installation it could cause fast wear or lack of grip

If u are not on a very tight budget
buy all the required parts then return what u don't use

I don't know where people get the idea of us using cars all the time. This morning I had to wait 30 minutes before I could leave the house because there was a lion in my garden. I have had some close calls running to the safety of the garage.

The irony

After the last post I went out to my shed to get a set of screw drivers (it's 7:40pm)
So I can pull apart my free 9" grinder ( u can pull apart tools in front of the fire/ TV went u are single)

At the front door there was a daddy long legs (big non poisonous spider)
Then in the shed a redback skuttled though the torch light
After I slapped the shed door a startled magie swooped me

Needless to say I'm not going back outside till sunrise
